Key Features
Pixel-Exact
The BMP is read directly, so every pixel, including semi-transparent ones in 32-bit BMPs, is kept exactly.
Compact PNG Layout
Palette, greyscale, RGB or RGBA is chosen per image, with maximum DEFLATE compression.
Batch + ZIP
Convert as many files as you like and download them all in one ZIP.
Summary: How to Convert BMP to PNG Free and Privately
BMP to PNG conversion turns an uncompressed Windows bitmap into a PNG that holds exactly the same pixels, usually in a much smaller file. To convert here, click Select BMP Files (or drop .bmp files on the box). Each file converts at once, and you click Download PNG or Download All (ZIP). There is no signup, no watermark and no file limit.
The conversion is lossless. The tool reads the BMP itself instead of redrawing it on a canvas, so colors and semi-transparent pixels are copied exactly, and it then writes the PNG in a compact layout chosen from its colors: a palette of up to 256 colors, greyscale, 24-bit RGB or RGBA. It runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded (you can check the Network tab in DevTools).
Need the opposite for an old program that only reads bitmaps? Use the PNG to BMP converter. For a smaller photo and a little quality loss, turn the PNG into a JPG with the PNG to JPG converter or a WebP with the PNG to WebP converter.
Table of Use: Which BMPs Become Which PNGs
| BMP you have | PNG you get |
|---|---|
| 24-bit screenshot with large flat areas | A palette PNG if it has 256 colors or fewer, otherwise 24-bit RGB; usually far smaller than the BMP |
| 8-bit or 4-bit palette BMP, such as old Windows graphics | A palette PNG at 1, 2, 4 or 8 bits per pixel, depending on how many colors are really used |
| 32-bit BMP with an alpha channel | A PNG with the same transparency (RGBA, or a palette with transparency when 256 values suffice) |
| 32-bit BMP whose fourth byte is unused | An opaque PNG without an alpha channel |
| Grey scan or 8-bit greyscale BMP | An 8-bit greyscale PNG, or a small palette if it has 16 or fewer shades |
| RLE4 or RLE8 compressed BMP | Decoded, then usually written as a palette PNG |
| BMP with embedded JPEG or PNG data, or another rare variant | Decoded by your browser instead; the card says so |
Why BMPs are big: an uncompressed BMP stores every pixel, so its size is set by the dimensions alone. Row size in bytes = ((bits per pixel × width + 31) ÷ 32, rounded down) × 4, and the pixel data = row size × height. A 24-bit 1,920 × 1,080 BMP therefore holds 5,760 × 1,080 = 6,220,800 bytes of pixels, whether the picture is a blank window or a detailed photo. PNG compresses that, and the tool chooses the layout like this:
| PNG layout | Chosen when |
|---|---|
| 1, 2, 4 or 8-bit palette | 256 distinct colors or fewer (opaque grey images with more than 16 shades use greyscale instead) |
| 8-bit greyscale | Opaque, all pixels grey, more than 16 shades |
| 24-bit RGB | Opaque color image with more than 256 colors |
| Greyscale with alpha or 32-bit RGBA | Transparency present and more than 256 distinct values |
Features
- Pixel-exact reading. Windows and OS/2 bitmaps at 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 24 and 32 bits per pixel, RLE4 and RLE8 compression, custom bit masks, top-down files and alpha are decoded by the tool itself.
- Compact lossless PNG. The layout is picked per image from its colors; greyscale, RGB and RGBA rows each get the prediction filter that suits them, palette images are stored unfiltered, and DEFLATE runs at maximum compression.
- A report on every card. Original (BMP) and Converted (PNG) previews side by side, the pixel size, before and after file sizes, a "smaller" or "larger" percentage and a line such as 24-bit → PNG 8-bit palette, 37 colours. A total appears above the cards.
- Batch with one ZIP. Convert any number of files, and Download All (ZIP) saves converted-png.zip. Duplicate names get -2, -3 and so on.
- Names kept. photo.bmp becomes photo.png; .dib files work too.
- Honest errors. A file without the BM signature is skipped with a message, and a truncated or damaged BMP reports an error instead of producing a broken PNG. Images above 268,435,456 pixels are refused.
- Not carried over. DPI and embedded color profiles are not written to the PNG; only the pixels are. Set DPI in your layout program if you need it for print.
How to Use the BMP to PNG Converter
- Click Select BMP Files, or drop .bmp (or .dib) files on the dashed box. In a file picker, Ctrl+A (⌘+A) selects every file in the open folder.
- Wait a moment while each card shows Converting…, then check Original (BMP) against Converted (PNG) and the size line.
- Click Download PNG on a card to save that file.
- For many files, click Add More to add others and Download All (ZIP) to save them together. The trash icon on a card removes it, and Clear All empties the page.
After converting, you can resize the pictures with the image resizer or shrink them further with the image compressor. Other old formats have their own converters too: the JPG to PNG, GIF to PNG, TIFF to PNG and ICO to PNG converters all work the same way.
Who Can Use It
- Office and home users who need to email or upload a bitmap that is too big or not accepted.
- Developers and engineers handling output from older Windows software, scanners, industrial cameras and embedded displays, which still write BMP.
- Designers and game modders who want a lossless copy of a sprite or texture with its transparency kept.
- Students and teachers converting lab screenshots into files that open everywhere.
FAQs
How do I convert BMP to PNG for free?
Click Select BMP Files, or drop .bmp files on the dashed box. Each file converts straight away and its card shows the old and new size. Click Download PNG on a card, or Download All (ZIP) to save every converted file at once. There is no signup, no watermark and no limit on how many files you add.
Does converting BMP to PNG lose quality?
No. PNG compression is lossless and this converter reads the BMP pixel data itself instead of redrawing the picture on a canvas, so the PNG holds the same pixel values, including semi-transparent ones. Only the print resolution (DPI) and any embedded color profile are not copied; both are optional extras, not pixels.
What is the difference between BMP and PNG?
BMP is the Windows bitmap format. It usually stores every pixel uncompressed, so its size depends only on width, height and bit depth. PNG stores the same pixels with lossless compression, supports transparency, and opens in browsers, phones, office programs and image editors. For sharing or publishing, PNG is the more practical container.
How much smaller will my PNG be, and can it come out larger?
Screenshots, charts, diagrams, pixel art and scanned text have large flat areas and shrink the most. Noisy photographs shrink less. Very small BMPs can come out larger: every PNG carries about 60 bytes of fixed structure, and a palette PNG adds a color table of up to 780 bytes, so a 16 by 16 image with 256 colors grows from 822 to 1,120 bytes. Each card shows the exact before and after size and marks a larger result.
Is transparency kept when I convert a BMP to PNG?
Yes, when the BMP really has it. A 32-bit BMP with an alpha channel becomes a PNG with the same alpha values. Many programs write 32-bit BMPs whose fourth byte is unused or always zero; those are treated as fully opaque, so the picture does not vanish. Opaque images are saved without an alpha channel.
Which BMP files can it convert, and why was my file skipped?
Windows and OS/2 bitmaps with 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 24 or 32 bits per pixel, including RLE4 and RLE8 compression, custom bit masks and top-down files. A file must begin with the BM signature, so a renamed JPG or PNG is skipped with a message. Rare variants, such as BMPs holding embedded JPEG data, are decoded by the browser instead and marked on the card.
Can I convert many BMP files at once?
Yes. Select or drop as many files as you like, add more later with Add More, and click Download All (ZIP) to get converted-png.zip. Files convert one after another so the page stays responsive. If two files share a name, the second is saved as name-2.png inside the ZIP so neither overwrites the other.
Is it safe to convert BMP files online? Are they uploaded?
Your files are not uploaded. They are read, decoded and converted on your own device, and the PNG download is created there. You can confirm it by watching the Network tab in your browser DevTools while you convert: no request carries your image. That makes it suitable for confidential scans and screenshots.
