Summary: How to Add a Watermark to a Photo Free and Privately

To add a watermark to a photo free and privately, choose your photos in the tool above, type your watermark text or upload a logo, pick a position or a tiled pattern, set the opacity and click Download. The mark is drawn onto a canvas in your browser at the photo's full pixel size. There is no signup, and no mark of ours is added.

Your photos and logo are processed on your own device and are never uploaded; you can confirm this in the Network tab of your browser's DevTools. The only third-party request the tool can make is for a Google Font, and only after you pick one (the FAQ below says what Google receives).

A visible watermark credits you and discourages casual reuse. It cannot stop a determined editor, so pair it with smaller copies: shrink photos first with the image resizer or trim them with the image cropper, and cut file size afterwards with the image compressor. For a caption instead of an ownership mark, use add text to image.

Table of Use: Watermark Settings for Common Jobs

Starting points, not rules
GoalWhat to setWhat you get
Client proofs or a portfolio previewText type, tick Tiled pattern, Opacity about 40%, Rotation -30A diagonal repeating mark across the whole photo
Credit line on a blog or social photoText type, Position bottom-right (default), Opacity 70%, Shadow onA small copyright line in the corner

Sizes are percentages of the photo's width: text size in pixels = Text Size % × image width ÷ 100. That is why one setting suits a whole mixed batch. The defaults are Text Size 4%, Logo Width 20% and Edge Margin 3%:

Features

  • Text, Logo or Both. Both puts the logo above the text as a single block. Logos can be PNG, JPG, WebP or SVG, and transparency is kept.
  • Nine positions or a tiled pattern. Pick a corner, edge or the center with an Edge Margin of 0 to 20%, or tile the mark in a staggered grid with Tile Spacing of 0 to 50%.
  • Opacity, rotation and shadow. Opacity from 5 to 100%, Rotation from -90 to 90 degrees, and a Shadow (0 turns it off) with its own color so light text stays readable on bright areas.
  • 64 fonts or your own. 13 system fonts (used if your device has them), 51 Google Fonts, and a Font button for TTF, OTF, WOFF or WOFF2 files that stay on your device.
  • Preview equals output. The preview is drawn by the same code as the download and is capped at 1,200 pixels on the long side; the file you save is rendered fresh at the photo's own width and height.
  • One setting for the batch. There is no fixed limit on how many images you add; your device's memory is the practical limit, so split very large galleries into batches. One watermark setup applies to every image in a batch. To treat some photos differently, run them as a separate batch.
  • Limits. Only image files are accepted. Photos over 32,767 pixels on a side or about 268 megapixels are rejected with a message, and phone browsers may allow less. Animated GIFs use their first frame.

How to Use the Add Watermark Tool

  1. Click Select Images, or drop image files on the dashed box. The settings panel and one preview per photo appear.
  2. Under Watermark Settings, choose the Watermark Type: Text, Logo or Both.
  3. For text, edit Watermark Text (it starts as a copyright line with the current year), then set Font, Text Size and Text Color. For a logo, click the Logo Image box and choose a file, then set Logo Width.
  4. Set Opacity, Shadow and Rotation.
  5. Press one of the nine Position buttons and adjust Edge Margin, or tick Tiled pattern (repeat across the whole image) and set Tile Spacing.
  6. Choose Save as if you want a specific format, then click Download on a photo or Download All (ZIP). The X on a card removes that photo.

If your logo sits on a flat background, make it transparent first with the background remover. Brighten a dull photo with the brightness adjuster before marking it, or combine several photos in the collage maker and watermark the collage once. For smaller files afterwards, use the PNG to WebP converter or the PNG to JPG converter.

Who Can Use It

  • Photographers sending proofs or posting portfolio samples, then making web-sized copies with the thumbnail generator.
  • Online sellers putting a shop logo on a whole catalog of product shots in one pass.
  • Bloggers and creators adding a credit line or site address to images before posting.
  • Designers and agencies marking drafts so unapproved work is clearly identified.

FAQs

How do I add a watermark to a photo for free?

Click Select Images and choose your photos. Under Watermark Settings pick Text, Logo or Both, type your text or upload a logo, then choose one of nine positions or tick Tiled pattern. Adjust opacity and size, check the preview, and click Download. No signup is needed and no extra mark is added. The preview uses the same drawing code as the saved file.

Is it safe to watermark photos online? Are my images uploaded?

Your photos and logo are never uploaded: they are decoded and watermarked on a canvas on your device, and the files are created there. The only third-party request the tool can make is to Google Fonts, and only after you pick a Google font. Google then sees your IP address and which font and character range you asked for, never your pictures or text.

How do I watermark many photos at once?

Add all the photos with Select Images or Add Images. One set of settings applies to every photo, and text size, logo width, margin and tile spacing are percentages of each photo's width, so the mark looks the same on a phone snapshot and a camera original. Click Download All (ZIP) to get watermarked-images.zip.

How do I put my logo on a photo as a watermark?

Choose Logo, or Both to place the logo above a line of text, then click the Logo Image box and pick a file. A PNG with a transparent background is ideal because transparency is kept; JPG, WebP and SVG logos also load. Logo Width is a percentage of the photo's width, 20% by default.

How do I make a watermark repeat across the whole image?

Tick Tiled pattern. The mark repeats in a staggered, brick-like grid that covers the photo edge to edge, and Tile Spacing (0 to 50% of the photo's width) sets the gap. Rotation from -90 to 90 degrees tilts the whole grid, so -30 gives a diagonal pattern. A tiled mark is far harder to crop away than a corner mark.

Where should I place a watermark so it cannot simply be cropped out?

A corner mark is the least intrusive and the easiest to crop off. Center it, or use the tiled pattern, so removing it means editing the subject itself. Choose a moderate Opacity so the photo can still be judged. No visible watermark is impossible to remove, so also share web-sized copies instead of your originals.

How do I type the copyright symbol in a watermark?

The Watermark Text box starts with the copyright symbol, the current year and Your Name, so you only replace the name. To type the symbol yourself, press Option+G on a Mac keyboard, or hold Alt and type 0169 on a Windows numeric keypad. It is ordinary text, so it shows in any font that has that character.

What format and quality are watermarked images saved in?

Under Save as, keep the original format or choose PNG, JPEG or WebP. The original format is kept when your browser can write it; otherwise PNG is used. JPEG and WebP are encoded at 92% quality, PNG is lossless, and JPEG turns transparent areas white. Files keep their original width and height and are named like photo_watermarked.jpg.
