Remove Background

Remove a plain or evenly coloured background, such as a white studio backdrop, a flat colour or a green screen, and save a transparent PNG. Open an image, check the detected background colour, click any patches that are left, adjust the tolerance, then download. It works by colour, not AI, and runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded.

Open an image

Drop a JPG, PNG, WebP or other image here, or choose one from your device.

Works best on product photos, logos, signatures and screenshots with a plain background.

Plain backgrounds, cleanly

Detects the background colour from the image edges, removes it with an adjustable tolerance and softens the cut so edges stay smooth.

Transparent PNG output

Download a PNG with a transparent background, or put the subject on a new solid colour.

Private by design

The image is processed by your own browser. It is never uploaded, so it works for confidential product shots and signatures.

Background remover for plain backgrounds: free, private, no upload

To remove a background from an image free and private, click Select Image and open a photo, logo or scan with a plain background. Check the colour listed under Background colours to remove, move Tolerance until the background is gone, and click Download PNG. You get a transparent PNG at the original size. Nothing is uploaded: the work happens in your browser, and the Network tab in DevTools will show it.

This is a colour-based background remover, not an AI cut-out tool. It finds the most common colour along the image edges, makes pixels near that colour transparent and fades the border so outlines are not jagged. That suits a white studio backdrop, a flat-colour logo, a scanned signature or a green screen. It cannot separate a person from a busy street, because that background is many colours at once.

Trim the cut-out with the image cropper or set its final size with the image resizer. Keep it as PNG, because JPG cannot store transparency.

Features

  • Automatic background colour. The most common opaque colour along the four edges is chosen. A note warns when fewer than half the edge pixels are close to it.
  • Click to add colours. Each click in the preview adds that pixel's colour. Without a mouse, choose a colour with Another background colour and press Add colour; it is removed from the edges inward. Up to 24 colours can be added. Remove one with its × button, or use the Forget added colours link. Detect from edges resets the main colour.
  • Tolerance 0 to 60 and Edge softness 0 to 30. Both are percentages of the largest possible RGB colour distance, about 442 units.
  • Two scopes. Background connected to the edges spreads inward from the border and stops at the subject. These colours everywhere (also inside shapes) removes matching colours anywhere.
  • Colour fringe removal. On by default; it un-blends the background colour from soft edge pixels so no halo is left.
  • Result and Original toggle, plus a readout of how much of the image was removed.
  • PNG output at full size. The file is named like logo-no-background.png and keeps your original pixel dimensions. One image is processed at a time.

A pixel is background when its distance d to a background colour is at most T, where d = sqrt(dR² + dG² + dB²) and T is the Tolerance setting as a percentage of 441.7. At the default 12, that is about 53 colour units. S is Edge softness, converted the same way: between T and T + S a pixel keeps (d - T) / S of its opacity, so the edge fades in.

How to remove a background, step by step

  1. Click Select Image, or drop a JPG, PNG, WebP or other image on "Open an image".
  2. Look at the Result preview. The detected colour appears under Background colours to remove, marked "from the edges".
  3. If the wrong colour was picked, change it with the swatch, or remove it with × and click the background.
  4. Move Tolerance until the background is gone and Edge softness until the outline looks smooth. Switch between Result and Original to compare.
  5. Click any patch that is left. Choose These colours everywhere only if you want matching colours inside the subject removed as well.
  6. Pick Transparent or Colour under New background, then click Download PNG. Open another image starts again; Close clears the page.

Give the cut-out finishing touches with the round corner generator, or place it over a new photo with the image overlay tool. To keep transparency in a smaller file, convert the PNG with the PNG to WebP converter; the PNG to JPG converter fills transparent areas with a colour you choose instead.

Who can use it

  • Online sellers with product shots on white who need a transparent cut-out for a listing or a catalogue.
  • Small-business owners and designers preparing a logo for a coloured page, a slide or a favicon.
  • Anyone signing documents who needs a scanned signature without the paper behind it.
  • Video and photo hobbyists with green-screen stills.
  • People who want a private tool because the image is unreleased, personal or confidential.

For photos with busy backgrounds, as of October 2026 many phones and computers have a built-in subject cut-out, such as lifting the subject in Photos on iPhone and iPad (touch and hold, then Copy), Copy Subject on a Mac, or the Remove background button in Windows 11 Paint. FAQs

How do I remove a background from an image for free?

Click Select Image and open your picture. The tool detects the background colour from the image edges and removes it at once. Adjust Tolerance until the background is gone and Edge softness until the outline looks smooth, then click Download PNG. If patches of background remain, click each one in the preview to remove its colour too, or, from the keyboard, choose its colour with Another background colour and press Add colour.

How do I remove a white background and make it transparent?

Open the image: for a photo on a white backdrop the detected colour is already near white, so the background disappears immediately. Raise Tolerance a step at a time if grey shadows or JPEG noise remain, lower it if parts of the subject fade. Download PNG saves real transparency; the checkerboard in the preview shows the see-through areas.

Is this an AI background remover?

No. It works by colour: pixels close to the background colour become transparent. That suits product photos on white or grey, logos on a flat colour, scanned signatures and green-screen shots. It cannot separate a person from a busy street or a patterned wall, because those backgrounds contain many colours. For such images use a subject-detection tool.

What do Tolerance and Edge softness do?

Tolerance sets how far a colour can be from the background colour and still count as background; the slider goes from 0 to 60 and starts at 12. Edge softness, 0 to 30 and starting at 6, makes colours just beyond the tolerance partly transparent instead of cutting them hard, which gives smoother outlines.

Why are areas inside my subject still there, or missing?

By default only background connected to the image edges is removed, so a white shirt logo or the inside of a letter is kept. Choose These colours everywhere (also inside shapes) to clear matching colours inside the subject too, or click an enclosed area to remove just that region. If the subject itself fades, lower Tolerance.

How do I get rid of the white halo around the edges?

Keep Remove colour fringe from soft edges ticked, which it is by default. Edge pixels are a blend of subject and background, so the tool subtracts the background colour from those partly transparent pixels and they stop carrying a white or green tint. A slightly higher Tolerance or Edge softness also helps on JPEG photos.

Can I put the subject on a different background colour?

Yes. Under New background choose Colour and pick any colour with the swatch; the downloaded PNG then has that solid colour behind the subject instead of transparency. For a photo background, download the transparent PNG and place it over another picture with the image overlay tool.

Is it safe to remove a background online? Is my image uploaded?

Nothing is uploaded. Your browser decodes the image, JavaScript on your device compares pixel colours, and the PNG is created on your device. No server or AI service receives the picture, and you can confirm that in the Network tab of DevTools while you work. This makes it suitable for unreleased products and signatures.
