Image Blur Tool
Blur a whole photo or only the parts you pick — faces, number plates, names in a screenshot. Choose Gaussian, box or motion blur, set the radius, then download the result. Everything runs in your browser, so your image is never uploaded.
Drop images here or click to upload
JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP — any image your browser can open. Select several images to blur them one after another, each with its own settings.
Privacy First
All image blurring is done in your browser. Your images never leave your device. JPG files are saved as JPG and WebP files as WebP (Safari cannot write WebP, so there you get a PNG with a .png name); everything else (PNG, GIF, BMP…) is saved as PNG, and transparency is kept.
Blur an image online, free and private
To blur an image online, drop it on the upload area, pick Gaussian, Box or Motion blur, set the Blur Radius between 1 and 50 px and click Download Blurred Image. To hide only a face, a number plate or a line of text, set Blur Mode to Selective Areas and drag a rectangle over each one; everything outside the rectangles stays sharp.
Blurring replaces every pixel with an average of the pixels around it, so detail fades as the radius grows. This free image blur tool does that work in your browser: the photo is blurred on a canvas by JavaScript running on your own device, nothing is uploaded, and you can confirm it in the Network tab of your browser's DevTools.
The download keeps your format. JPG stays JPG, WebP stays WebP, and PNG, GIF and BMP become PNG with transparency intact. The file name gets a "_blurred" suffix, so your original is never overwritten. Crop away what you do not need first with the image cropper, then shrink the result with the image compressor or stamp it using the add watermark tool.
Table of Use: what to blur and where to start
The radii below are starting points, not guarantees. How much blur is enough depends on how many pixels tall the thing you are hiding is, so zoom in on the result before you share it.
| Goal | Blur Mode | Blur Type and radius | Check before sharing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hide a face in a group photo | Selective Areas | Gaussian, 25-30 px for a face about 100-120 px tall | No eyes or mouth visible at full size |
| Cover a car number plate | Selective Areas | Gaussian, start at 30 px and raise it | No character readable at 100% zoom |
| Hide a name, email or account number in a screenshot | Selective Areas | Gaussian, 50 px, on a box slightly larger than the text | Letters and digits have merged into a smear |
| Soften a busy background behind a caption | Full Image | Gaussian, 10-25 px | Whole picture soft; text added afterwards stays crisp |
| Suggest speed or movement | Full Image or Selective Areas | Motion, 15-30 px, Motion Angle 0 degrees (horizontal) | Streaks follow the angle; do not use it to hide anything |
After blurring a background, add a caption with Add Text to Image, or darken the edges of the frame with the vignette effect tool.
Features
- Three blur types. Gaussian runs three box passes whose combined spread matches a Gaussian with standard deviation sigma = radius / 1.732 (the square root of 3). Box averages the 2 x radius + 1 pixels around each pixel in a row, then in a column. Motion averages pixels along a straight line at the angle you choose, 0 to 179 degrees.
- Blur Radius from 1 to 50 px. The slider starts at 10 and the preview re-renders a moment after you stop dragging.
- Full Image or Selective Areas. Draw as many rectangles as you need on the preview, or type X (from left), Y (from top), Width and Height in image pixels. Numbers that fall outside the picture are adjusted to fit, and each area has its own Remove button.
- Before/After Comparison. Drag across the preview (in Selective Areas mode, use the slider under it) to move the line between the original and the blurred version.
- Undo and Redo. Each image keeps up to 30 saved versions, covering changes to the settings and the areas.
- Several images at once. Select multiple files and each gets its own settings and its own Download Blurred Image button. There is no ZIP download.
- Transparency stays clean. Blurring uses premultiplied colour values, so transparent edges do not pick up dark halos.
- No face or plate detection. You mark every area yourself, so you see exactly what is covered instead of trusting a detector that may miss a face.
To make a photo crisper instead, use the image sharpener; to remove grain rather than add softness, try the image noise reducer.
How to blur an image online, step by step
- Drop one or more images on "Drop images here or click to upload", or click Select Images. Any image format your browser can open works.
- Under Blur Type choose Gaussian (natural), Box (fast) or Motion (directional). Motion adds a Motion Angle slider from 0 to 179 degrees.
- Drag the Blur Radius slider from Light Blur to Heavy Blur.
- Choose Blur Mode. Leave it on Full Image to blur everything, or pick Selective Areas and drag rectangles over the faces, plates or text to hide. Green numbered boxes mark each area.
- Check the result with the Before/After Comparison line. Use Undo, Redo or Clear All Areas if you want to change course.
- Click Download Blurred Image. If the picture is too big for a web page or an email, run it through the image resizer as a last step.
Who can use it
- Sellers and landlords who need to hide a number plate or street sign before posting photos, then make a thumbnail for the listing.
- Support and documentation teams who share screenshots containing names, emails or account numbers.
- Parents, teachers and community admins who want to share a group photo without showing every face.
- Bloggers and designers who want a soft background for a headline or a collage panel.
FAQs
How do I blur only part of a photo online?
Load the image, set Blur Mode to "Selective Areas", then drag a rectangle over each face, number plate or line of text on the preview. You can also type X (from left), Y (from top), Width and Height in image pixels and click "Add area". Only the rectangles are blurred. Remove one with its Remove button, or click "Clear All Areas", then click "Download Blurred Image".
Is it safe to blur photos online, or are they uploaded?
This tool does not upload your photo. It is opened, blurred and saved by JavaScript in your own browser using the Canvas API, so nothing is sent to ZipConvert or anyone else, and closing the tab discards it. You can check this in the Network tab of your browser DevTools: the only image entries are local blob: addresses, and no request sends your photo to a server.
How much blur do I need to hide a face or a number plate?
It depends on how many pixels tall the face or plate is. As a rule of thumb, set the radius to at least a quarter of its height: about 25 to 30 px for a face 100 to 120 px tall, and more for close-ups. Then zoom in on the result. If you can still make out eyes, letters or digits, raise the radius.
Can a blurred image be unblurred?
The downloaded file does not contain the original pixels, so there is no undo for whoever receives it. A strong blur cannot be reversed in practice, but a light blur over text or numbers can sometimes be guessed or partly sharpened, because only so many digits or words produce a given smudge. For passwords and ID numbers use the maximum radius, or cover the area completely.
What is the difference between Gaussian, box and motion blur?
Gaussian blur weights nearby pixels more than distant ones and looks the smoothest, so it is the sensible default. Box blur gives every pixel in the radius equal weight, which looks slightly blockier at large radii. Motion blur smears pixels along one direction (0 degrees horizontal, 90 vertical) and is an effect, not a privacy tool, because detail across the streaks stays sharp.
How do I blur part of a picture on iPhone or Android?
Open this page in Safari or Chrome, tap Select Images and choose a photo from your library. Set Blur Mode to "Selective Areas" and drag a finger across the preview to draw each rectangle. If dragging is fiddly on a small screen, type the X, Y, Width and Height values instead, then tap "Download Blurred Image". Nothing is installed and nothing is uploaded.
What format and quality is the blurred image saved in?
JPG files are saved as JPG and WebP files as WebP, both at quality 0.92 on the canvas encoder. PNG, GIF and BMP files are saved as PNG, with transparency kept. Safari cannot write WebP, so there a WebP input is saved as a PNG with a .png name. Animated GIFs are not animated in the output; only the first frame is blurred.
What is the difference between blurring and pixelating an image?
Blurring averages each pixel with its neighbours so edges fade smoothly. Pixelating replaces blocks of pixels with one flat colour, which gives a mosaic. Both hide detail only when they are strong enough, and both can leak information when weak. This tool blurs, so use a large radius for anything sensitive and check the output at full size.
