WebP to PNG Converter

Convert .webp images to PNG, the format every browser, editor and app can open. Drop or select WebP files and each one is converted straight away, with transparency kept exactly; download the PNGs one by one or as a ZIP. Animated WebPs can be split into one PNG per frame. It all runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.

Why Convert WebP to PNG?

Universal Compatibility

PNG works everywhere—older browsers, legacy software, and systems that don't support WebP. Convert for maximum compatibility.

Transparency Preserved

The PNG keeps WebP's alpha channel pixel for pixel, including soft, semi-transparent edges.

No Further Quality Loss

PNG stores the decoded WebP pixels exactly, so the image does not lose any more detail—ideal for archiving and editing. An embedded colour profile (such as Display P3) is copied too, so colours stay the same.

No Server Upload

All conversion happens in your browser. Your images never leave your device, ensuring complete privacy.

WebP to PNG converter: save WebP images as PNG, free and private

To convert WebP to PNG for free, click Select Files, or drop .webp files on the upload box. Each file is converted the moment it is added; click Download PNG on a card, or Download All (ZIP) to save everything as webp-to-png.zip. The PNG keeps the original name with a .png extension, and transparency is preserved.

WebP is Google's image format for the web; PNG is the lossless format that almost every program, upload form and editor accepts. This converter runs in your browser: a WebAssembly build of libwebp decodes the file on your own device, so nothing is uploaded (you can check the Network tab in DevTools). The only downloads are the decoder code, fetched from ZipConvert the first time you convert a file, and the ZIP library, fetched the first time you click a ZIP button.

Going the other way? The PNG to WebP converter makes smaller web images. For other sources, see JPG to PNG, GIF to PNG and TIFF to PNG.

Table of Use: what each kind of WebP becomes

WebP types and the PNG each one produces
Your WebPWhat you get
Lossy photoA PNG with the same pixels: no extra loss, no restored detail, and often a much larger file
Lossless WebP, logo or screenshotUsually a somewhat larger PNG, but far closer in size than a lossy photo
WebP with transparencyAn RGBA PNG; soft edges and shadows are copied exactly
Fully opaque still WebPA PNG without an alpha channel, written in the smallest lossless layout
WebP with a Display P3 or Adobe RGB profileA PNG with the same ICC profile embedded
Animated WebPname.png with the first frame, plus name-frame-001.png and onward if you extract frames
A file that only has a .webp nameSkipped, with a message that it is not a WebP image
A damaged or cut-off WebPAn error message; other files carry on converting

Features

  • Pixel-exact decoding. Still images are decoded by libwebp and written straight to PNG, not through a browser canvas, which would round away the colour of nearly transparent pixels.
  • Colour profile kept. An embedded RGB ICC profile is copied into the PNG. A profile a PNG cannot carry, such as CMYK, is handled by letting the browser convert the colours to sRGB.
  • Every frame of an animation. Click Extract every frame as PNG on an Animated card to get one PNG per frame, each labelled with its number and display time, and download them together with Frames (ZIP).
  • Batch conversion. There is no file limit. Each card shows Resolution, WebP Size, PNG Size and whether the PNG is smaller or larger. Download All (ZIP) also includes any frames you extracted.
  • Fallback decoder. If the WebAssembly decoder cannot start, the browser's own decoder converts the image instead.

Large PNGs can be shrunk afterwards with the image compressor or scaled with the image resizer. If you need a smaller photo instead of a lossless one, use the PNG to JPG converter.

How to convert WebP to PNG, step by step

  1. Click Select Files, or drop .webp files on "Drop WebP files here or click to upload". Several at once is fine.
  2. Wait for each card to say Completed, then compare its WebP Size with its PNG Size.
  3. Click Download PNG on a card, or Download All (ZIP) for the whole batch.
  4. For an animated file the card is marked Animated and says "First frame converted". Click Extract every frame as PNG, then click one thumbnail to save that frame, or Frames (ZIP) for all of them.
  5. Use the bin icon to drop one result, or Clear All to start again.

Who can use it

  • Anyone who saved a picture from a website and got a .webp file that their editor or document software will not open.
  • Online sellers and form fillers whose platforms reject WebP, perhaps then needing a thumbnail at an exact size.
  • Designers and developers who need transparent PNG assets, or want to turn one into an icon or a favicon.
  • Animators and meme makers who want individual frames from an animated WebP.

FAQs

How do I convert WebP to PNG?

Click Select Files, or drop .webp files onto the upload box. Each file is converted as soon as it is added. Click Download PNG on a card to save one image, or Download All (ZIP) for everything as webp-to-png.zip. The PNG keeps the original file name with a .png extension, and there is no sign-up or file limit.

Does converting WebP to PNG reduce quality?

No. Still images are decoded with libwebp, running in your browser, and written to PNG pixel for pixel, including semi-transparent pixels. A lossy WebP keeps exactly the quality it already had: PNG cannot bring back detail lost when the WebP was made, but it adds no further loss. A colour profile such as Display P3 is copied into the PNG.

Why is my PNG larger than the original WebP?

WebP, especially lossy WebP, compresses photographs far better than PNG can, because PNG must store every decoded pixel without loss. A lossy photo can become several times larger as a PNG, while a lossless WebP usually grows far less. Each card shows the WebP size, the PNG size and the percentage difference.

How do I convert an animated WebP to PNG?

This converter writes still PNGs, so the main PNG contains the first frame. On the card, click Extract every frame as PNG to get one PNG per frame, named like clip-frame-001.png, with each frame's display time in milliseconds. Download frames one by one or with Frames (ZIP). Frame extraction needs the ImageDecoder API, which Chrome, Edge and Firefox (133 or later) have as of October 2026, according to MDN's browser compatibility data; in browsers without it, only the first frame is converted.

Does WebP to PNG keep the transparent background?

Yes. The alpha channel is copied exactly, so soft edges, shadows and gradual fades look the same as in the WebP. Fully opaque still images are saved as PNGs without an alpha channel, which keeps them smaller. If the transparency is missing in the original WebP, the converter cannot add it; use a background remover for that.

Is it safe to convert WebP files online, or are they uploaded?

Files are read and converted inside your browser and are never uploaded or stored. You can confirm that in the Network tab of DevTools. The only downloads are the decoder code, fetched from ZipConvert the first time you convert a file, and the ZIP library, fetched when you first click a ZIP button. The PNG carries no EXIF or XMP data, so details such as GPS location are not copied.

What is the difference between WebP and PNG?

WebP is an image format from Google that offers lossy and lossless compression, transparency and animation in one file type, usually at smaller sizes. PNG is lossless only, supports transparency, is accepted almost everywhere and is usually a single still image (animated PNG exists, but this tool does not create it). People convert WebP to PNG for editors, upload forms and older software that reject WebP.

Which browsers and programs cannot open WebP?

All current browsers display WebP. Internet Explorer never supported it, and Safari added support in version 14 in 2020 (on Macs only from macOS Big Sur), so older iPhones, iPads and Macs that cannot install it may not show WebP. Some older desktop programs, document editors and website upload forms still refuse .webp files, which is the usual reason to convert to PNG.
