Summary: How to Invert Image Colors Free and Privately
To invert an image's colors is to replace each red, green and blue value with 255 minus itself, so black becomes white, white becomes black and every hue turns into its opposite. This tool does it in your browser. Add JPG, PNG, WebP or GIF files, choose which of the Red, Green and Blue channels to flip, check the Original and Inverted previews side by side, then download one file or a ZIP of them all.
It runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded (you can check the Network tab in DevTools). Transparent areas stay transparent, every image keeps its pixel dimensions, and there is no fixed limit on how many files you add.
Tune the result with the contrast adjuster or the brightness adjuster, drain the color with the grayscale converter, or warm the tones with the sepia filter.
Table of Use: Which Channels to Tick for Each Job
| Job | Tick | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Classic photo negative | Red, Green and Blue (the default) | Light and dark swap and every color turns into its opposite; blue skies turn orange. |
| White copy of a black logo on a transparent PNG | Red, Green and Blue | Black pixels become white; transparent pixels stay transparent at the same opacity. |
| Dark copy of a screenshot or scanned page | Red, Green and Blue | White background turns black and dark text turns light. |
| Cyan tint on highlights | Red only | White areas become cyan and pure red areas become black. |
Each checkbox flips one channel and leaves the others alone.
| Channels inverted | White becomes | Black becomes | Red becomes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Red, Green, Blue (full negative) | Black | White | Cyan |
| Red only | Cyan | Red | Black |
| Green only | Magenta | Green | Yellow |
| Blue only | Yellow | Blue | Magenta |
| Green + Blue | Red | Cyan | White |
Features
- Per-channel control. The Red Channel, Green Channel and Blue Channel checkboxes give eight combinations; with none ticked the images are left unchanged.
- Instant updates. Changing a checkbox re-processes every image from its original, and each card shows Original and Inverted side by side.
- Transparency kept. Only the color channels change. The alpha channel passes through untouched, which suits logos, icons and cut-outs from the background remover.
- Batch with one ZIP. Add as many images as your device can hold. Download All (ZIP) packs the results into inverted-images.zip.
- Same format and size back. JPG stays JPG, PNG stays lossless PNG and WebP stays WebP, at the original pixel dimensions; lossy files are re-encoded at 95% quality. To change the format or size, use the PNG to JPG converter or the image resizer; to shrink the file, the image compressor.
How to Use the Color Inversion Tool
- Click Select Images, or drag files onto the dashed upload box. JPG, PNG, WebP and GIF are accepted, and you can pick several at once.
- Each image appears as a card with Original and Inverted previews. All three channels are inverted by default, so the first preview is already the full negative.
- In Inversion Settings, tick or untick Red Channel, Green Channel and Blue Channel. Every card updates straight away.
- Click Download on a card to save one file as name_inverted.jpg, .png or .webp, or Download All (ZIP) to save inverted-images.zip.
- Use the trash-can button on a card to remove that image, or Clear All to start over.
To read exact values from an inverted result, open it in the image color picker. To invert an animated GIF frame by frame, first split it with the GIF to PNG converter and add the PNG frames here.
Who Can Use It
- Designers and developers who need a light copy of a dark icon or a quick dark-mode mock-up.
- Photographers and artists trying negative and split-channel looks before moving on to the saturation adjuster for grading.
- Teachers and students showing complementary colors, or the 255-minus-value rule behind a negative.
- Anyone reading a white-background scan in a dim room, where a dark copy is easier on the eyes.
Inversion changes how a picture looks, not what it records, so skip it for product photos or identification images.
FAQs
How do I invert the colors of an image online for free?
Open the Color Inversion Tool, click Select Images and choose a JPG, PNG, WebP or GIF file. A full negative appears straight away, because all three color channels are inverted by default. Compare the Original and Inverted previews, then click Download. There is no account and no watermark.
Is it safe to invert my photos online? Are they uploaded?
Your images stay on your device. The tool reads each file in your browser, inverts the pixels on an HTML canvas and hands the result back as a download. To confirm it, open the Network tab in your browser's DevTools while you add a file: no request sends your image to a server; the only entries are data: and blob: URLs your browser creates locally.
What is the formula for inverting an image's colors?
For every pixel, the new value of a channel is 255 minus the old value, because each 8-bit channel runs from 0 to 255. A pixel of (200, 100, 50) becomes (55, 155, 205). The alpha value that controls transparency is left alone, and inverting twice returns the original numbers.
Can I invert only the red, green or blue channel?
Yes. Under Inversion Settings, tick or untick Red Channel, Green Channel and Blue Channel and every image updates straight away. That gives eight combinations, from none (the image is left unchanged) to all three (a full negative). Inverting only red, for example, turns white areas cyan.
Does inverting a PNG keep the transparent background?
Yes. Only the red, green and blue values change; the alpha channel is copied through untouched. A black logo on a transparent background comes out as a white logo on the same transparent background, and semi-transparent edges keep their opacity. PNG, WebP and GIF files keep their transparent areas.
Which image formats work, and what format do I get back?
You can add JPG, PNG, WebP and GIF files. JPG, PNG and WebP come back in the same format: PNG stays lossless, while JPG and WebP are re-encoded at 95% quality. A GIF is saved as a PNG, and for an animated GIF only the first frame is inverted. Pixel dimensions never change; EXIF metadata is not carried over.
How do I invert many images at once?
Select several files in one go, or drag them together onto the upload box. Every card uses the same channel settings, and Download All (ZIP) saves the results as inverted-images.zip. There is no fixed limit, so the ceiling is your device's memory. Files with the same name are numbered in the ZIP, never overwritten.
