Higher quality = larger file. 75–90 suits most photos.

Lossy mode discards detail you are unlikely to notice. Google reports lossy WebP files 25–34% smaller than comparable JPEGs. Transparency is kept. 16-bit PNGs are reduced to 8 bits per channel. EXIF and XMP metadata are not copied.

Why Convert PNG to WebP?

Smaller files

Lossy WebP is usually much smaller than PNG for photos, and lossless WebP is often smaller than PNG while keeping every pixel.

Faster pages

Smaller images download faster, which helps page load times, especially on mobile connections.

Transparency support

Unlike JPG, WebP keeps the alpha channel in both lossy and lossless mode, so logos and cut-outs stay transparent.

Works in current browsers

Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari all display WebP, including animated WebP.

PNG to WebP converter: lossy, lossless and animated, free and private

To convert PNG to WebP free and private, drop your PNG files on the upload area (or click Select Files), choose Lossy or Lossless under Compression Mode, set the Quality slider if you chose Lossy (it starts at 85), and click Download or Download All (ZIP). The conversion runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, and you can check that in the Network tab of DevTools.

WebP is an image format from Google that supports lossy compression, lossless compression, transparency and animation. Both modes keep the alpha channel, which JPG cannot do. Every card lists the PNG size, the WebP size and the saving, and a warning appears when the WebP is no smaller than the PNG, so you decide with real numbers rather than averages.

To turn a WebP back into a PNG, use the WebP to PNG converter. If the destination only accepts the older format, the PNG to JPG converter fills transparent areas with a colour you choose.

Table of Use: PNG to WebP settings for common jobs

Settings to use for common PNG to WebP jobs and what each produces
Your PNGSettingWhat you get
Photograph for a web pageLossy, Quality 75 to 90A much smaller WebP with detail you are unlikely to miss
Logo, icon or screenshot with textLosslessPixel-identical image; sometimes only a little smaller than the PNG
Transparent product cut-outLossy or LosslessTransparency kept; Lossless also keeps the colour of soft edges exactly
PNG with an embedded colour profileLosslessAn RGB profile is written into the WebP; a grey profile, and Lossy mode, convert to sRGB
Several frames for a short animationAdd 2 or more PNGs, then Create Animated WebPanimation.webp at the first image's size, with the frame time you set
A folder of PNG filesSelect them all, then Download All (ZIP)converted-webp.zip, with duplicate names numbered
PNG wider or taller than 16,383 pxShrink it firstReported and skipped, because WebP allows 16,383 px per side at most

Reducing the pixel dimensions often saves more than lowering the quality. Set the size first with the image resizer or make small listing pictures with the thumbnail generator.

Features

  • Lossy and Lossless modes. Quality runs from 0 to 100, starts at 85 and applies to Lossy only. In Chrome and Edge, Lossy at Quality 100 produces a lossless WebP, so use 99 or lower for a lossy file.
  • Exact lossless path. A PNG with transparency or a colour profile is read with a real PNG decoder and written with libwebp's exact mode, because a canvas rounds the colour of semi-transparent pixels. A PNG whose gamma chunk makes browsers shift its colours is stored as your browser shows it, and a grey colour profile is applied so the WebP holds sRGB.
  • Animated WebP. Reorder frames with the arrow buttons, set Time per frame (1 to 60,000 ms) and Times to play (0 to 65,535, where 0 means forever). Changing a file or a setting discards the animation, so you rebuild it with current settings.
  • Browser encoder first, WebAssembly second. Chrome, Edge and Firefox can write WebP from a canvas. When a browser cannot write WebP or lossless WebP, or when Lossless mode needs exact pixels, libwebp compiled to WebAssembly is loaded from ZipConvert and runs on your device.
  • Batch queue. Files are converted one at a time, a mode or quality change converts them all again, and Download All (ZIP) stays disabled until the queue is idle.
  • Honest limits. Files are checked by their first bytes, so a renamed JPG is skipped with a message. Damaged or oversized images are reported, and 16-bit PNGs are reduced to 8 bits per channel.

If you only need a lighter PNG or JPG without changing format, the image compressor handles JPG, PNG and WebP. For a GIF instead of an animated WebP, use the PNG to GIF converter.

How to convert PNG to WebP, step by step

  1. Drag your files onto "Drop PNG files here or click to choose", or click Select Files.
  2. Under Compression Settings pick Lossy or Lossless. In Lossy mode, move Quality; 85 is a sound start for photos.
  3. Compare Resolution, PNG size and WebP size on each card, and look at both previews.
  4. Click Download on a card, or Download All (ZIP) for the batch. Clear All empties the list.
  5. For an animation, add two or more PNGs, order them with the arrows, set the timing under Animated WebP and click Create Animated WebP.

Trim a picture first with the image cropper. For print or archive masters, where WebP is the wrong choice, the PNG to TIFF converter keeps every pixel in a format print workflows accept.

Who can use it

  • Web developers and site owners chasing faster pages and better Core Web Vitals scores by swapping heavy PNGs for WebP.
  • Online sellers and bloggers preparing product images and hero pictures, perhaps with a watermark added before conversion.
  • Designers exporting UI assets with transparency, or short looping animations that are lighter than GIF.
  • Anyone sharing sensitive images who wants conversion without handing the files to a server.

FAQs

How do I convert PNG to WebP?

Drop one or more PNG files on the upload area or click Select Files. Each file converts straight away in your browser. Pick Lossy or Lossless under Compression Mode, move the Quality slider in lossy mode, and every image is encoded again with the new setting. Then click Download on a card, or Download All (ZIP).

Should I use lossy or lossless WebP?

Use Lossy for photographs, where a smaller file matters more than exact pixels; quality 75 to 90 suits most. Use Lossless for logos, icons, screenshots and anything with text, where every pixel must stay as it was. Each card shows the PNG and WebP sizes, so you can switch modes and compare on your own image.

Is WebP smaller than PNG, and by how much?

Usually, but it depends on the picture. Google reports lossless WebP about 26% smaller than PNG on average and lossy WebP 25 to 34% smaller than comparable JPEG. Photographs saved as PNG often shrink a great deal in lossy mode; flat graphics shrink less. When a WebP is not smaller, the card says so and suggests lossy mode.

Does converting PNG to WebP keep transparency?

Yes. WebP has an alpha channel in both modes, so transparent and semi-transparent pixels stay transparent. In Lossless mode a PNG with transparency is read with a full PNG decoder and the colour and alpha of every pixel are kept exactly as your browser shows them. In Lossy mode the colour is approximated, but the transparency is kept.

How do I make an animated WebP from PNG files?

Add two or more PNGs and put them in order with the arrow buttons. Under Animated WebP set Time per frame (ms) and Times to play (0 = forever), then click Create Animated WebP and download animation.webp. The animation takes the size of the first image; other sizes are scaled to fit and centred.

Which browsers can open WebP files?

As of October 2026, current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera and Safari display WebP, including animated WebP. Safari added support in version 14 in 2020, and Internet Explorer never supported it. If you must serve very old browsers, offer a PNG or JPG fallback with the HTML picture element.

Is it safe to convert PNG to WebP online? Are my images uploaded?

Nothing is uploaded. Your browser's own WebP encoder does the work where it can. In Lossless mode, PNGs with transparency or a colour profile, and any browser that cannot write WebP or lossless WebP, use a PNG decoder and libwebp compiled to WebAssembly: code files downloaded from this site when first needed that also run on your device. You can confirm in the Network tab of DevTools that no request carries your images.

Does PNG to WebP keep EXIF metadata and colour profiles?

EXIF and XMP metadata are not copied, which also removes details such as GPS location. An embedded RGB colour profile is kept in Lossless mode. A grey profile is applied and the WebP saved in sRGB, because a WebP is always RGB. In Lossy mode the browser draws the PNG in sRGB first, so the profile is not carried over. A 16-bit PNG is reduced to 8 bits per channel, because WebP has no 16-bit mode.
