Why Convert PNG to JPG?

Smaller photo files

For photographs, a JPG is usually a fraction of the size of the same image saved as PNG, which suits websites, email and storage.

Faster loading

Smaller files download faster, which matters most on mobile connections.

Made for photos

JPG compresses smooth colour gradients and natural detail well. Keep logos, text and screenshots as PNG.

Opens everywhere

Every browser, phone, camera app and image editor can open a JPG.

PNG to JPG converter: free, private, no upload

To convert PNG to JPG free and private, drop your PNG files on the upload area (or click Select Files), set the JPG Quality slider, and click Download, or Download All (ZIP) for a batch. Each file is converted in your browser with the canvas API. Nothing is uploaded, and you can check that in the Network tab of DevTools.

JPG is a lossy format that cannot hold transparency. Quality runs from 1 to 100 and starts at 90, and every transparent or semi-transparent pixel is blended onto the Background colour you choose, white by default. Each result card shows the PNG size, the JPG size and the percentage saved, or an amber note when the JPG came out larger.

Going the other way? The JPG to PNG converter changes the file type but cannot bring back detail that JPG already discarded. If you need a small file that keeps transparency, use the PNG to WebP converter.

JPG compresses photographs well and handles flat graphics badly, which is why the same slider gives very different savings on different pictures. For a lossless file with a print resolution, the PNG to TIFF converter is the better route.

Features

  • JPG Quality from 1 to 100. The slider starts at 90. A change re-encodes every image after a short pause.
  • Background colour for transparency. Use the colour picker, type a hex value such as #fff or #ffffff, or click White or Black. An invalid hex is ignored and the last good colour is kept.
  • Transparency detection. Cards for images with see-through pixels carry a Has transparency badge, and the original preview sits on a checkerboard.
  • Size report. Resolution, PNG size and JPG size appear on every card, with the percentage saved or a warning when the JPG is bigger.
  • Optional metadata. Keep EXIF and XMP metadata is off by default. When on, the EXIF and XMP are written into the JPG; if your browser has already turned the pixels upright, the orientation tag is reset so viewers do not rotate the photo twice. A block over 64 KB is skipped and the card says so.
  • Batch with ZIP. Convert any number of files, then download each one or all as converted-jpg.zip.
  • Content-based PNG check. Files are tested by their first bytes, so a renamed JPG is not converted silently.
  • Plain file names. photo.png becomes photo.jpg. There is no watermark and no account.

The JPG is written by your browser's own encoder, and there is no progressive-JPEG option. To shrink the file further, reduce the pixel count with the image resizer or run the result through the image compressor.

How to convert PNG to JPG, step by step

  1. Drag your files onto "Drop PNG files here or click to choose", or click Select Files.
  2. Under Conversion Settings, move the JPG Quality slider. Start near 85 for photos.
  3. If a card shows Has transparency, set the Background colour (fills transparent areas) to match where the picture will be used.
  4. Tick Keep EXIF and XMP metadata only if you want camera details copied across.
  5. Compare Resolution, PNG size and JPG size on each card, and look at the JPG preview.
  6. Click Download on a card, or Download All (ZIP) when several files are ready. Clear All empties the list.

Need exact dimensions first? Set them with the image resizer or trim the frame with the image cropper, then convert.

Who can use it

  • Website owners and bloggers replacing photographic PNGs to make pages lighter, then making listing images with the thumbnail generator.
  • Anyone filling in an upload form that accepts only JPG, such as an application, a marketplace or a ticket system.
  • Photographers and designers sending a lighter preview of a lossless master, perhaps with a watermark added first.
  • Privacy-minded users who want a converter that never receives their pictures. Developers who embed small images in code can turn the result into text with the image to Base64 converter.
  • Content teams who need other formats from the same PNG, such as the PNG to BMP converter or the PNG to ICO converter.

FAQs

How do I convert a PNG to JPG for free?

Drop one or more PNG files on the upload area or click Select Files. Each file is converted at once with the current settings. Move the JPG Quality slider or change the Background colour and every image is encoded again, then click Download on a card, or Download All (ZIP) for the whole batch. No account is needed.

Is it safe to convert PNG to JPG online without uploading?

Yes. This converter runs in your browser: your browser decodes the PNG and re-encodes it as JPG with the canvas API, and the download is built on your device. Nothing is uploaded, and you can check this in the Network tab of DevTools while you convert. Your images are never sent to ZipConvert or anyone else.

What happens to the transparent parts of my PNG?

JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent and semi-transparent pixels are blended onto the Background colour, which is white by default. Choose the colour of the page or slide the image will sit on, using the picker, a hex code, or the White and Black buttons. To keep transparency, convert to WebP instead.

What JPG quality should I choose when converting a PNG?

The slider runs from 1 to 100 and starts at 90. For photographs, 80 to 90 is a sensible range for web pages and email, and 90 to 95 suits prints or images you may edit again. Lower values give smaller files with more visible blocking. Each card shows both file sizes, so you can compare before downloading.

Why is my JPG larger than the PNG?

PNG stores flat colours, sharp edges and repeated patterns very efficiently, so screenshots, diagrams and logos are often smaller as PNG. JPG is built for photographs with smooth gradients and natural detail. When the JPG comes out larger, the card shows an amber note saying so, and keeping the PNG is usually the better choice.

Does converting PNG to JPG keep EXIF or GPS data?

Not by default. The JPG is written without metadata, so GPS position, camera details and dates are not carried over. If you tick Keep EXIF and XMP metadata, the EXIF block (from the PNG's eXIf chunk) and the XMP packet are copied into the JPG. Colour profiles and PNG text comments are never copied.

Can I convert many PNG files to JPG at once?

Yes. Select or drop as many PNG files as your device's memory allows. They share one quality and one background colour, and changing either re-encodes the whole batch. Download All (ZIP) saves converted-jpg.zip, and files with the same name are numbered, for example photo.jpg and photo-2.jpg, so none overwrite each other.

Why was my file skipped or rejected?

The converter checks the first bytes of each file, not its name. A JPG or WebP renamed to .png is skipped with a message saying it is not a PNG. A damaged PNG is reported as undecodable, and an image above 32,767 pixels on a side or about 268 megapixels is reported as too large for the browser to draw.
