Free PNG to BMP Converter

Convert PNG images to Windows bitmap (BMP) files. Pick 24-bit for compatibility or 32-bit to keep transparency, add your PNGs and download each BMP or a ZIP. Conversion happens in your browser.

PNG to BMP Converter: Convert PNG to BMP Free and Privately

A PNG to BMP converter rewrites a compressed PNG image as an uncompressed Windows bitmap. To do it free and privately, choose 24-bit RGB or 32-bit RGBA in the tool above and add your PNG files. Your browser decodes each one and builds the BMP on your device, so nothing is uploaded, and the Network tab in DevTools will show that.

BMP is a simple format, a small header followed by raw pixel values, which is why some microcontroller display libraries, industrial panels, lab programs and older Windows software still ask for it. Everywhere else PNG is the better file, so keep the PNG original and convert a copy for the system that needs BMP. Expect a much larger file, because BMP size depends only on the dimensions.

24-bit vs 32-bit BMP

Property24-bit RGB32-bit RGBA
Bytes per pixel3, rows padded to a multiple of 4 bytes4
TransparencyNone; blended with your background colourFull 8-bit alpha channel
HeaderBITMAPINFOHEADER, 40 bytesBITMAPV5HEADER, 124 bytes, with an alpha mask

A 32-bit BMP only keeps transparency if the file says which byte is alpha. A file with the old 40-byte header marks the fourth byte as reserved, so most programs ignore it. This converter writes the version-5 header with an explicit alpha mask and stores your background colour inside fully transparent pixels, as a fallback for readers that still ignore alpha. To shrink a BMP, reduce its dimensions first with the Image Resizer; halving width and height cuts the file to a quarter.

PNG to BMP Converter Features

  • Two colour depths: 24-bit RGB and 32-bit RGBA (alpha). Both use standard headers.
  • Background colour: a colour picker sets what fills transparent areas. It only matters when your PNG has transparency.
  • Exact colours: PNG files go through a PNG decoder instead of the browser canvas, which would round the colour of semi-transparent pixels. The canvas is only a fallback if the decoder cannot load.
  • Batch conversion: each card shows the original beside the BMP, the dimensions, both file sizes and the percentage change.
  • Consistent settings: change the depth or colour and every file is re-converted.
  • Other image types: JPG, WebP and GIF files are accepted and converted the same way; files that are not images are skipped with a message.
  • Browser only: no upload, and a message explains if an image is too large to build as a BMP.

How to Use the PNG to BMP Converter

  1. Under Conversion Settings, choose 24-bit RGB or 32-bit RGBA (keeps transparency).
  2. If your PNGs have transparent areas, set the Background colour. Match it to where the image will be shown to avoid light or dark fringes.
  3. Click Select PNG Files or drop files on the dashed box; later, use Add More.
  4. Click Download BMP on a card, or Download All (ZIP) once every file is ready. Clear All starts over.

Who Can Use the PNG to BMP Converter

Embedded developers preparing splash screens for small displays, engineers feeding bitmaps to industrial or lab software, game modders, and anyone with a legacy Windows program that refuses PNG. For the opposite direction use the BMP to PNG Converter. Other formats have their own tools: the PNG to JPG Converter for small photo files, the PNG to TIFF Converter for print and archiving, the PNG to ICO Converter for icons and the PNG to WebP Converter for the web. JPG files work here directly (the JPG to PNG Converter is for a separate PNG copy), and the Remove Background tool creates the transparent PNGs that 32-bit BMP can keep.

PNG to BMP FAQs

How do I convert PNG to BMP for free?

Choose 24-bit RGB or 32-bit RGBA under Conversion Settings, pick a background colour if your PNG has transparent areas, then click Select PNG Files or drop the files on the dashed box. Each is converted straight away. Click Download BMP on a card, or Download All (ZIP) for a batch. Changing a setting re-converts every file.

Should I choose 24-bit or 32-bit BMP?

Choose 24-bit unless you need transparency. It opens in practically every program that reads BMP, and transparent areas are filled with your background colour. 32-bit keeps the alpha channel, which Windows, macOS, web browsers and editors such as GIMP read correctly, but some older or embedded software ignores alpha and shows the background colour instead.

Does converting PNG to BMP lose quality?

Not for ordinary 8-bit PNGs: BMP stores pixels uncompressed, so every colour value is copied exactly. The output is 8 bits per channel, so a 16-bit-per-channel PNG is reduced. The other change is for transparent PNGs saved as 24-bit BMP, where transparent and semi-transparent pixels are blended with the background colour.

Why is the BMP so much bigger than the PNG?

PNG is compressed and BMP is not. A 24-bit BMP takes width ร— height ร— 3 bytes (each row padded to a multiple of 4 bytes) plus a 54-byte header, whatever the picture shows. A 1920 ร— 1080 image is 6,220,854 bytes as a 24-bit BMP and 8,294,538 bytes as 32-bit, while the PNG of a simple graphic can be a few kilobytes.

Why does my BMP show a black or white background where the PNG was transparent?

The program showing it ignores the alpha channel, or you chose 24-bit, which has no alpha. In 24-bit each pixel is blended with your background colour: colour ร— alpha + background ร— (1 โˆ’ alpha). Re-convert as 24-bit using the colour the image will sit on, or use 32-bit with a program that reads BMP alpha.

Is it safe to convert PNG to BMP online?

With this converter, yes. Your browser decodes the PNG and builds the BMP on your device, so the files are never uploaded to ZipConvert or anyone else. You can watch the Network tab in DevTools to confirm. The page fetches only its own code, such as the PNG decoder and the ZIP library, the first time they are needed.

Is PNG metadata kept in the BMP?

No. BMP has no standard place for text metadata, so PNG text chunks (author, description, software) and embedded colour profiles are not carried over. The 32-bit file is marked as sRGB, which is what almost every PNG uses, and the colours of opaque pixels are copied unchanged.
