Image Cropper

Crop a photo in three steps: upload it, drag the frame (or type exact pixel values), then download. Lock an aspect ratio, use social media presets that also resize to the right pixel size, rotate, and let the tool position the frame on the most detailed area. It all runs in your browser.

Upload Image to Crop

Drag and drop an image here, or click to browse

JPG, PNG and WebP keep their format (Safari saves WebP crops as PNG); GIF, BMP, AVIF and others are saved as PNG

Crop an image online, free and private

To crop an image online, click Select Image, drag the green frame over the part you want to keep (or type Width, Height, X and Y in pixels), then click Download Cropped. The crop is cut from the full-resolution original, and the button shows the output size, for example Download Cropped (960 x 640).

You can lock an aspect ratio (1:1, 16:9, 4:3, 3:2, 9:16 or a Custom one) or pick a social media preset that resizes the result to the platform's pixel size. This free image cropper runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded and you can confirm that in the Network tab of DevTools. JPG, PNG and WebP keep their format (Safari and iPhone browsers cannot write WebP, so there a WebP is saved as PNG); GIF, BMP, AVIF and other types are saved as PNG.

Cropping removes pixels but does not shrink the file the way compression does, so you may want the image compressor afterwards, or the image resizer for exact dimensions without trimming.

Features

  • Drag, type or use the keyboard. Drag inside the frame to move it, or a corner to resize it. With the frame focused, arrow keys nudge it 1 pixel (Shift: 10). Each side is at least 10 pixels where the image and ratio allow.
  • Aspect Ratio. Free, 1:1, 16:9, 4:3, 3:2, 9:16 or Custom. Changing ratio reshapes the frame around its centre and keeps about the same area.
  • Rotate Left and Rotate Right. The pixels themselves are turned 90 degrees, so what you see is what you download.
  • Zoom, Undo and Redo. Zoom In and Zoom Out run from 0.5x to 3x and change only the editor view. Undo and Redo cover every change to the frame or its ratio.
  • Auto-position on detail. Moves the frame onto the area with the most edges and colour; it does not detect faces.
  • Formats. JPG and WebP at quality 0.92 (Safari and iPhone browsers save WebP as PNG), PNG lossless with transparency, all with 8 bits per channel in sRGB colour; files are named like photo_cropped.jpg.

Preset Crops built into the tool

A preset locks the ratio, frames the largest centred area and, while "Resize the result to exactly" is ticked, resizes the crop to the listed size. As of October 2026 the official pages say: Instagram Help Centre ("Image resolution of photos you share on Instagram": widths up to 1080 px, ratios 1.91:1 to 3:4), YouTube Help (custom thumbnails: 16:9, 3840 x 2160 recommended), X Help Center ("How to customize your profile": header 1500 x 500), LinkedIn Help (profile background photo: 1584 x 396) and Facebook Help Centre (Page cover photo: 851 x 315, so the 820 x 312 preset differs slightly).

How to crop an image, step by step

  1. Click Select Image, or drop a picture on "Upload Image to Crop". One image is cropped at a time.
  2. Choose an Aspect Ratio, or tap a Preset Crop such as Instagram Post.
  3. If the picture is sideways, click Rotate Left or Rotate Right first. A tilt of a few degrees is a job for the image rotator.
  4. Move the green frame, drag a corner, or type Width, Height, X and Y under the Preview, or click Auto-position on detail.
  5. Check the Cropped Image below. The line under the preview shows the Image and Crop sizes, plus the Result size when a preset resizes the crop.
  6. Click Download Cropped. Use Remove Image to start over with another picture.

FAQs

How do I crop an image to an exact size in pixels?

Type Width, Height, X and Y in pixels under the preview, pressing Enter after each, or drag the green frame. With the ratio on Free, type Width and Height first, then X and Y; typing X or Y first pulls the current frame back inside the picture. For a fixed output size, pick a preset such as YouTube Thumbnail, which resizes the result to 1280 by 720.

How do I crop a photo to a square?

Click 1:1 under Aspect Ratio. The frame becomes a square of about the same area, centred where it was (784 by 784 from the default frame on a 1200 by 800 photo); drag it to adjust. For the largest centred square, pick the Instagram Post preset and untick "Resize the result to exactly": the crop stays 800 by 800 here.

What size should I crop for Instagram, YouTube or X?

The presets use 1080 by 1080 (Instagram post), 1080 by 1440 or 1350 (portraits), 1080 by 1920 (stories), 1280 by 720 (YouTube), 1500 by 500 (X header) and 1584 by 396 (LinkedIn cover). As of October 2026, X Help Center and LinkedIn Help list the last two. YouTube Help recommends 3840 by 2160, so if your photo is wider than 1280 px, untick the resize box to keep full resolution.

Does cropping reduce image quality?

JPG and WebP crops are re-encoded at quality 0.92, which changes the pixels very slightly; PNG crops are lossless and keep transparency. Every crop is saved at 8 bits per channel in sRGB, so a 16-bit PNG loses precision and a Display P3 image loses colours outside sRGB. A preset that enlarges a small crop can make it look soft, and the tool warns you.

Can I rotate an image before cropping it, and undo a crop?

Yes. Rotate Left and Rotate Right turn the picture in 90 degree steps, and the editor shows the rotated image, so the frame matches the download. Undo and Redo step through changes to the frame and ratio; rotating resets that history. For a small tilt, use the image rotator first.

How does Auto-position on detail work?

It keeps the frame's size and moves it onto the area with the most edges and colour, measured on a copy at most 200 pixels on its longest side. That is often the subject, but it is not face or object recognition, so check the result and adjust the frame.

How do I crop a photo on my iPhone or Android phone?

Open this page in your phone browser, tap Select Image and choose a photo. Drag inside the green frame to move it or a corner handle to resize it; on a small screen you can type Width, Height, X and Y instead. Then tap Download Cropped. Nothing needs installing.

Is it safe to crop private photos here, and are they uploaded?

The image is not uploaded. It is opened, cropped and saved by JavaScript in your own browser, and nothing is sent to ZipConvert or anyone else (check the Network tab in DevTools). The saved crop is drawn on a canvas and encoded again, so metadata such as camera model or GPS position is not copied into it.
