Summary: How to Make a Photo Collage Free and Privately
A photo collage maker combines several pictures into one image, arranged in a grid or a custom layout. To make a collage here, click Add Images, choose a layout, drag photos into cells or swap them, set the spacing and background, pick a size and click Download. Photos fill the cells automatically, and the file is saved at the size you chose, up to 8,192 pixels per side, with no watermark.
Everything runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded (you can check the Network tab in DevTools). The blue selection outline and the dashed guides on empty cells appear in the preview only and are never saved in the file.
If a particular part of each photo must show, trim it first with the image cropper. Afterwards, add a caption with add text to image, mark it with the watermark tool or shrink the file with the image compressor.
Table of Use: Layouts and Sizes for Common Collages
| Goal | Layout and settings | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Square Instagram post | 2×2 or 3×3 Grid, Square 1080×1080 (Instagram post), Spacing 10 | Four or nine photos in one tidy square |
| Portrait post with one hero photo | Big Left, Portrait 4:5 1080×1350, Image Fit Cover | One large photo and two supporting ones |
| Story or phone wallpaper | 2 Stacked or 3 Stacked, Story 9:16 1080×1920 | Large photos that stay readable on a phone |
| Before and after | 2 Side by Side, Image Fit Contain | Both photos shown whole, side by side |
| Product comparison sheet | 3×2 Grid, Image Fit Contain, white Background | Six products on one sheet with nothing cropped |
| Print at 10 × 10 inches | 2×2 Grid, Print 10×10 in at 300 DPI (3000×3000) | A 3000 × 3000 pixel file for printing |
| Sticker or overlay sheet | Transparent background (PNG/WebP), Image Fit Contain, Save as PNG | A collage with clear gaps to layer elsewhere |
Spacing is the gap between photos and also the margin around the edge, measured in output pixels. The width left after the gaps, output width − spacing × (columns + 1), is shared between the columns, and inner columns come out half a spacing wider than the two edge columns (rows work the same way). At the default 1,200 × 1,200 size and 10 px spacing:
| Layout | Photos | Cell size |
|---|---|---|
| 2 Side by Side | 2 | 585 × 1,180 px |
| 2×2 Grid | 4 | 585 × 585 px |
| 3×3 Grid | 9 | 385 to 390 px square |
| 4×4 Grid | 16 | 285 to 290 px square |
Features
- 12 layouts. Nine grids (2 Side by Side, 2 Stacked, 3 Stacked, 2×2, 3×2, 2×3, 2×4, 3×3, 4×4) and three Creative Layouts (Big Left, Big Center, Big Top). Switching layouts keeps your photos, in order.
- Flexible placing. New photos fill empty cells by themselves. Drag a photo from the Images panel onto a cell, click it to fill the selected or first empty cell, drop files straight onto a cell, or drag one cell onto another to swap them.
- Cover or Contain. Set Image Fit for the whole collage and override it for any single cell with Fit in this cell.
- Rotate 90°. Turns the selected photo in quarter steps. The rotation belongs to the photo, so it stays if you move it.
- Spacing and background. Spacing from 0 to 100 px, a color picker with a hex box, or Transparent background (PNG/WebP).
- 12 size options. Eleven presets (square, portrait, story, Pinterest, landscape, 4K and print) plus Custom from 100 to 8,192 px per side.
- PNG, JPEG or WebP. JPEG and WebP are encoded at 92% quality, PNG is lossless, and JPEG turns a transparent background white. The file is named like collage-1200x1200.png.
- Full-size file. The preview is capped at 1,000 pixels on the long side; the download is drawn again at your chosen size.
- Limits. There is no pan or zoom inside a cell, since Cover crops around the center, so crop first when it matters. An oversized canvas can fail on phones with an error message.
How to Use the Collage Maker
- Click Add Images and choose several photos at once, or drop them onto a cell. They appear in the Images panel and in the cells.
- Choose a layout under Layouts: Grid Layouts or Creative Layouts. The default is the 2×2 Grid.
- Rearrange: drag photos into other cells, or click a cell to select it and use Rotate 90°, Fit in this cell, Swap with cell or Empty This Cell.
- Under Settings, set Collage Size, Spacing, Background, Image Fit and Save as.
- Click the green Download button. Its label shows the format and pixel size, for example Download PNG (1200×1200).
Match the look of your photos before combining them: even out exposure with the brightness adjuster, make a mixed set uniform with the grayscale converter, or mirror one photo with the image flip tool. For the finished file, choose a smaller format with the PNG to JPG converter or the PNG to WebP converter, or frame it with the image border adder. To resize a photo before it goes in, use the image resizer.
Who Can Use It
- Social media users and creators combining trip, event or recipe photos into one post.
- Online sellers showing colors, angles or a product set on a single listing image, then making a preview with the thumbnail generator.
- Teachers and families building a printable memory sheet, class poster or progress comparison.
- Designers and bloggers who need a quick mood board or a transparent collage to layer elsewhere.
FAQs
How do I make a photo collage online for free?
Click Add Images and choose your photos; they drop into the cells of the current layout automatically. Pick another layout if you like, drag photos between cells to rearrange them, then set Collage Size, Spacing and Background. Click Download to save the collage. There is no signup and no watermark, and the file is created on your device.
Is it safe to make a collage online? Are my photos uploaded?
Your photos are not uploaded. They are decoded and combined on a canvas in your own browser, and the finished file is created there. You can confirm it in the Network tab of DevTools while you work. Nothing is stored either: the collage lives only in the open tab, so closing or reloading the page clears it.
How many photos can I put in one collage?
The layouts hold from 2 to 16 photos: 2 Side by Side, 2 Stacked, 3 Stacked, 2×2, 3×2, 2×3, 2×4, 3×3 and 4×4 grids, plus the creative Big Left (3 cells), Big Center (5) and Big Top (3). You can load more photos than there are cells and swap them in and out, and one photo can fill several cells.
What is the difference between Cover and Contain?
Cover scales each photo until it fills its cell completely and crops the overflow equally from both sides, so there are no gaps. Contain shrinks each photo until all of it fits inside the cell, so nothing is cropped but background shows where the shapes differ. Select a cell to override the setting for just that photo.
What size should I choose for Instagram, Pinterest or print?
Collage Size has presets for Square 1080×1080 (Instagram post), Portrait 4:5 1080×1350, Story 9:16 1080×1920, Pinterest pin 2:3 1000×1500, Landscape 16:9 1920×1080 and 4K, and print sizes at 300 DPI. Custom accepts 100 to 8,192 pixels per side. Very large sizes need plenty of memory and may fail on a phone.
How do I make a collage with a transparent background?
Tick Transparent background (PNG/WebP) under Background, set Image Fit to Contain if you want the whole of each photo to show, and keep Save as on PNG or WebP. Gaps and uncovered areas are then fully transparent. JPEG cannot store transparency, so a JPEG collage gets a white background instead.
How do I swap, rotate or replace a photo in a collage?
To swap, drag a placed photo onto another cell, or select a cell and use Swap with cell. To rotate, select the cell and click Rotate 90°; each click adds a quarter turn. To replace, select the cell and click a different photo in the Images panel, or choose Empty This Cell to clear it.
Can I save my collage and edit it later?
No. There is no project file and no account, so the arrangement exists only while the tab is open. Download the finished image before you leave. To rebuild or tweak it later, keep your original photos, because the downloaded collage is a single flattened picture, not separate layers.
