Free Pixel Art Scaler

Enlarge pixel art, sprites and retro game graphics without blur. Upload one or more images, pick an algorithm and a scale, and download crisp PNGs. Everything runs in your browser.

Or drop files here. PNG, GIF (first frame), BMP or WebP; several at once is fine. Files stay on your device.

Pixel Art Scaler: Enlarge Sprites Without Blur, Free and Private

A pixel art scaler enlarges a low-resolution image by whole-number steps while keeping every edge sharp and every colour unchanged. To use this one, upload your PNG, GIF, BMP or WebP file, choose Nearest Neighbor, Scale2x or Scale3x, pick a scale factor and click the scale button. Your browser does all the work, so nothing is uploaded, and you can check that in the Network tab of DevTools.

Nearest Neighbor gives an exact blocky copy: at 4× each source pixel becomes a 4 × 4 square. Scale2x and Scale3x do the same job but also round off staircase diagonals using only colours already in the image. You download each result as a PNG, or all of them in one ZIP.

Which algorithm to choose

AlgorithmScalesChoose it for
Nearest Neighbor2× to 8×, 10×, 12×, 16×Chunky authentic pixels, game engines, tile sets that must line up
Scale2x (EPX / AdvMAME2x)2×, 4×, 8×Characters, curves and diagonal lines
Scale3x (AdvMAME3x)3×, 9×Smoother diagonals at 3× sizes

Scale2x was published by Andrea Mazzoleni for the AdvanceMAME emulator and is closely related to EPX, an older technique from LucasArts. For each pixel it compares the neighbours above, below, left and right; when two adjacent sides share a colour and the opposite sides do not, the corner between them takes that colour. Scale3x applies the same idea to a 3 × 3 block and also looks at the diagonal neighbours. Filters such as HQx and xBR blend new in-between colours, so this tool does not offer them.

Pixel Art Scaler Features

  • Three algorithms (Nearest Neighbor, Scale2x, Scale3x) and whole-number factors from 2× to 16×. Scale2x and Scale3x repeat to reach 4×, 8× and 9×.
  • Palette preserved. Only existing colours are copied. Fully transparent pixels are treated as one colour, so they do not leave stray edges.
  • Exact PNG and WebP reading. PNG and still WebP files go through their own decoders instead of the canvas, which keeps semi-transparent pixels exact.
  • Batch scaling. Add several images, scale once, and click a thumbnail to compare its original (shown enlarged) with the result.
  • Clear file names. Downloads are named like sprite_4x_scale2x.png, and the ZIP is pixel-art-4x.zip, so you can tell variants apart.
  • Safe limits. Output is capped at 16,384 pixels per side and 50 megapixels, with a message naming the size you asked for.
  • On your device. No upload; Start Over cancels a run and releases the images.

How to Use the Pixel Art Scaler

  1. Click Upload Pixel Art or drop PNG, GIF, BMP or WebP files on the upload area. Add More Images appends more.
  2. Under Scaling Settings, choose an Algorithm and a Scale Factor. The note below them explains the algorithm.
  3. Click Scale Image (or Scale N Images for a batch).
  4. Check Before & After, then click Download PNG, or Download All as ZIP when there is more than one result.
  5. Changing the algorithm or scale clears old results, so click the scale button again to apply new settings.

Who Can Use the Pixel Art Scaler

Indie game developers preparing sprites and tile sets, pixel artists posting work where small images get blurred by the platform, streamers making emotes and badges, and retro fans enlarging screenshots. Start from the original 1× file: if each pixel is already a 2 × 2 block, shrink it back with the Image Resizer first. Use PNG or GIF rather than JPG, because JPG noise makes neighbouring pixels differ and Scale2x stops smoothing.

Afterwards, trim the result with the Image Cropper, add a margin with the Image Border Adder, or turn it into an icon with the PNG to ICO Converter or the Favicon from Image tool. The Image Color Picker reads exact palette colours, the PNG to GIF Converter rebuilds animations, and the GIF to PNG Converter splits one into frames.

Pixel Art Scaler FAQs

How do I upscale pixel art without it going blurry?

Use a whole-number scale with nearest neighbor. Ordinary resizing (bilinear or bicubic) averages each new pixel from its neighbours, which turns hard pixel edges into soft gradients with colours that were never in your palette. Nearest neighbor only copies existing pixels, so 4× turns every pixel into a 4 × 4 square and edges stay sharp.

What is the difference between Nearest Neighbor, Scale2x and Scale3x?

Nearest Neighbor turns each pixel into a solid square, an exact enlarged copy. Scale2x (AdvMAME2x, closely related to EPX) and Scale3x (AdvMAME3x) also compare each pixel with its neighbours and, where two neighbours of the same colour meet at a corner, fill that corner with their colour. This rounds off stair-step diagonals while straight edges stay crisp.

Does scaling pixel art add new colours?

No. All three algorithms copy colours that already exist in the image, so the palette is unchanged and the result is still true pixel art. PNG and WebP files are read with built-in decoders so semi-transparent pixels keep their exact values. Other formats, animated WebP, and any file if those decoders cannot load go through the browser canvas instead, which can change the stored colour of semi-transparent pixels: slightly for most, considerably for nearly invisible ones.

Which scale factors can I choose, and why not 2.5×?

Nearest Neighbor offers 2× to 8×, 10×, 12× and 16×. Scale2x offers 2×, 4× and 8×, applying the filter once, twice or three times. Scale3x offers 3× and 9×. Only whole numbers appear because a factor such as 2.5× would make some pixels wider than others and distort the art.

Are my images uploaded when I scale them?

No. Your browser decodes, scales and saves the images as PNG on your own device, and nothing is sent to a server. You can watch the Network tab in DevTools to confirm. The page only fetches its own code, such as the PNG codec and the ZIP library, when they are first needed.

Is there a size limit for pixel art scaling?

The output may be up to 16,384 pixels on each side and 50 megapixels in total, which keeps it within what browsers can create reliably. A 1,000 × 1,000 image can therefore reach 7× with nearest neighbor (7,000 × 7,000). If a choice is too large, the tool names the resulting size and asks for a smaller scale.

Can I scale an animated GIF or sprite sheet?

A sprite sheet is just a PNG, so it scales like any image. For an animated GIF only the first frame is used. Export the frames as PNG files, scale them together as one batch so they stay consistent, then reassemble them with the PNG to GIF converter.
