Free Split Bill Calculator

Split a restaurant bill or shared expense three ways: equally, by custom percentages, or item by item. Enter the bill, tax and tip, add everyone's name and see exactly what each person owes — amounts are rounded so they add up to the total to the cent. You can also scan a receipt photo to fill in the items. Everything runs in your browser.

Summary: a split bill calculator that is free and private

A split bill calculator divides a restaurant check or shared expense between a group, adds tax and tip, and rounds each share so the parts add up to the total. This one offers Equal Split, Custom % and By Items for up to 50 people, and can fill in the items from a receipt photo. It runs in your browser, needs no sign-up, and your amounts are not uploaded (you can check the Network tab in DevTools).

Receipt scanning is the one feature that uses the network, and no receipt data is sent: each scan checks zipconvert.com for a self-hosted OCR engine, and the first scan downloads the engine and English language data (about 7 MB) from cdn.jsdelivr.net. The photo and its text stay on your device.

How the total and each share are worked out

  • Tax = bill × tax rate ÷ 100, rounded to the smallest currency unit.
  • Tip = (bill, or bill + tax) × tip rate ÷ 100, rounded the same way.
  • Total = bill + tax + tip. An equal share is the total divided by the number of people.

The tip calculator is quicker for a single tip, and the percentage calculator covers other percentage questions.

Features

  • Equal Split shows Each Person Pays and how many people pay one unit more when the total does not divide.
  • Custom % starts on equal shares and warns until the percentages reach 100%.
  • By Items shares an item among everyone it is assigned to and splits unassigned or unlisted amounts equally. If the items add up to more than the bill, a button sets the bill to their total.
  • Tip presets of 0, 10, 15, 18, 20 and 25%, a Custom tip % box, and tip on the bill before tax or on bill plus tax.
  • An Add sales tax switch with its own rate, to turn off when prices already include VAT or GST.
  • Scan Receipt reads item names and prices with OCR, skips card, cash and change lines, checks the figures against the receipt total and tells you what it decided.
  • Eight currencies, Copy split, and Save split, which keeps up to 10 splits in this browser's local storage (Load saved… brings one back).

The GST calculator and VAT calculator show how much of a price is tax.

FAQs

How do I split a bill fairly when everyone ordered different things?

Open the By Items tab, press Add Item for each dish with its price, and tap the names of the people who had it. An item assigned to several people is divided evenly between them. Tax and tip follow what each person had, and anything not assigned to anyone is split equally.

Should tip be calculated before or after tax?

Either is common, so the calculator lets you choose under Calculate tip on. Tipping on the pre-tax bill is the traditional US rule; some people tip on the total. On a 150.00 bill with 8% tax, an 18% tip is 27.00 before tax or 29.16 on the bill plus tax, a difference of 2.16.

Why does one person pay a cent more?

Some totals cannot be divided exactly: 100.00 among three people is 33.333… each. The calculator rounds every share to the smallest unit of the currency and gives the leftover cents to as few people as possible, so the shares add up to the exact total.

How do I split a bill unevenly when one person is treating a guest?

Use the Custom % tab: give the guest 0% and add their share to the person who is paying, so the percentages total exactly 100%. The tab warns you until they do. Or, in By Items, assign the guest’s dishes to whoever is treating them.

How do I split a bill when the prices already include VAT or GST?

Switch off Add sales tax and enter the amount on the receipt as the bill. Prices usually include VAT or GST in the UK, the EU, Australia and New Zealand. In the US and Canada tax is normally added at the till, so keep the switch on and enter the tax rate.

Is my receipt photo uploaded when I scan it?

No. The open-source Tesseract OCR engine reads the image in your browser, and it is never sent to a server. No receipt data is sent in any request: each scan only checks zipconvert.com for a self-hosted copy of the engine, and the first scan downloads the engine and English language data (about 7 MB) from the public cdn.jsdelivr.net.
