Summary: add or remove VAT, free and private

A VAT calculator adds value added tax to a net price or removes it from a VAT-inclusive price. To do it for free and privately, pick a country (30 European standard rates are built in) or a custom rate, choose Add VAT or Remove VAT, and enter the amount. Net, VAT and gross appear with the formula. It runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded, which the Network tab in DevTools will show.

To add VAT: VAT = net ร— rate รท 100 and gross = net + VAT. To remove it: net = gross รท (1 + rate รท 100) and VAT = gross โˆ’ net. At the UK rate of 20%, ยฃ100 net becomes ยฃ120 gross, and ยฃ120 gross splits back into ยฃ100 net and ยฃ20 VAT. For GST countries such as India or Australia, use the GST Calculator.

Features

  • 30 built-in standard rates. The 27 EU member states plus the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Norway, as of October 2026. Sources: the European Commission Taxes in Europe Database, HMRC, the Swiss Federal Tax Administration and the Norwegian Tax Administration.
  • Custom rate. Any rate up to 100%, for reduced rates, zero-rated sales or other countries.
  • Batch mode. Several amounts, each marked + VAT or โˆ’ VAT, with a totals row.
  • Exact to the cent. Halves round up on the VAT when adding and on the net when removing, so gross always equals net plus VAT. Batch totals add each line's rounded VAT; some invoicing rules differ, so check yours.
  • Copy buttons for net, VAT and gross, plus Copy summary as text for an email or invoice note.
  • Any currency. No symbol is added; amounts show two decimals, and 1,250.50 and 1.250,50 both work.

For the margin behind a price, use the Margin Calculator or Markup Calculator.

How to Use the VAT Calculator

  1. Pick the rate. Choose a country under Country (standard rate), click its tile in the rate table, or switch on the custom rate and type a percentage.

  3. Enter the amount. The label changes to Net amount or Gross amount to match.
  4. Read the Results. Net, VAT and gross appear with the formula. Copy any figure, or use Copy summary.
  5. Several amounts? Switch on Batch calculation, then use Add item for each line and set it to + VAT (net) or โˆ’ VAT (gross).

Who Can Use It

  • Freelancers and small businesses pricing work for clients abroad; the Invoice Generator can lay out the invoice.
  • Online sellers checking the VAT in a shelf price and setting promotions with the Discount Calculator.
  • Bookkeepers and shoppers checking receipts in the batch table; the Percentage Calculator covers other percentages.
  • Anyone paid abroad. Convert first with the Currency Converter, then add or remove VAT.
  • Contractors comparing take-home pay can use the Tax Calculator for income tax, a separate matter from VAT.

To tip on a pre-VAT amount, enter the VAT in the Tip Calculator's tax field.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I add VAT to a price?

Multiply the net price by the VAT rate to get the VAT, then add it to the net price. At 20%, ยฃ100 net has ยฃ20 VAT and a gross price of ยฃ120 (100 ร— 1.20). In the calculator, choose Add VAT, pick the rate and enter the net amount.

How do I remove VAT from a VAT-inclusive price?

Divide the gross price by 1 plus the rate; the difference is the VAT. At 20%, ยฃ120 รท 1.20 = ยฃ100 net, so the VAT is ยฃ20. Taking 20% off the gross price gives ยฃ96, which is wrong. In the calculator, choose Remove VAT and enter the gross amount.

What are the standard VAT rates in Europe in 2026?

As of October 2026, EU standard rates run from 17% in Luxembourg to 27% in Hungary (European Commission Taxes in Europe Database): Germany 19%, France 20%, Spain 21%, Italy 22%, Poland 23%. The UK is 20% (HMRC), Norway 25% and Switzerland 8.1%. Recent rises: Finland 25.5%, Slovakia 23%, Estonia 24%, Romania 21%.

How do I calculate a reduced VAT rate?

Reduced rates are not built in, because they vary by product and country. Switch on "Use a custom VAT rate (e.g. a reduced rate)", type the rate from your national tax authority, such as 5, and enter the amount. A custom rate also works in batch mode.

What's the difference between VAT and GST?

VAT (value added tax) and GST (goods and services tax) are the same kind of consumption tax under different names. VAT is the term used in Europe; GST is used in countries such as Australia, India, Canada, New Zealand and Singapore. Both tax the value added at each stage.

Is it safe to enter invoice amounts into an online VAT calculator?

With this one, yes. The VAT calculator runs in your browser, so the amounts you type are not uploaded or stored, and there is no sign-up. Open the Network tab in your browser's DevTools to confirm that calculating sends no request.
