Summary: calculate a tip and split the bill, free and private

A tip calculator works out the gratuity on a bill and the total you pay. To calculate a tip for free and privately, enter the bill in the tool above, pick a percentage (10, 15, 18, 20, 22 or 25, or type your own), set how many people are paying, and read the tip, the total and each person's share. It runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded, and you can check the Network tab in DevTools to see that.

The formula is tip = (bill − tax) × tip % ÷ 100, then total = bill + tip and each person pays = total ÷ people. Leave the tax field empty to tip on the whole bill. On an $85.50 bill with an 18% tip, 85.50 × 18 ÷ 100 = $15.39, so the total is $100.89. Money is handled in whole cents, so the shares always add up to the total.

To divide a shared bill with no tip, use the Split Bill Calculator; for other percentages, the Percentage Calculator; for everything else, the calculators hub.

Features

  • Six presets and a custom tip. Buttons for 10%, 15%, 18%, 20%, 22% and 25%, plus a field for any figure such as 17.5.
  • Tip before tax. The optional tax field makes the tip apply to the bill minus the tax. For sales-tax maths, see the GST Calculator or, for European prices, the VAT Calculator.
  • Bill splitting for up to 100 people. Each person's bill share, tip share and amount to pay, in whole cents.
  • Round up. Round the total up when paying alone, or each share when splitting. The extra goes to the tip.
  • 14 currency formats. USD, EUR, GBP, CAD, AUD, NZD, INR, SGD, AED, CHF, MXN, BRL, ZAR and JPY. Formatting only; to convert between currencies use the Currency Converter.
  • Easy entry and copying. 85.50, 85,50 and 1,234.56 all work, and copy buttons cover the total, the tip and each person's amount.

How to Use the Tip Calculator

  1. Type the Bill amount from your receipt, and choose the currency in the dropdown next to it if it is not US dollars.
  2. Add the tax (optional). Under Tax included in the bill, enter the receipt's tax to tip on the pre-tax subtotal.
  3. Choose the tip. Tap a button under Tip percentage, or type your own number in the Custom tip % field, which overrides the buttons.
  4. Set Split between (people). Use the + and − buttons or type a number from 1 to 100.
  5. Round up if you like. Switch on Round the total up, which becomes Round each share up when two or more people split.
  6. Read the Results. Total to pay, the tip, and under Per person the Bill share, Tip share and Each pays. Copy icons save retyping.

Who Can Use It

  • Diners at a table who want the tip and total without mental arithmetic.
  • Groups splitting a meal. For a plain division with no tip, a dedicated bill splitter is the shorter route.
  • Travellers who want amounts in the local currency format; customs differ by country, so see the FAQ below.
  • Delivery, salon and taxi customers. If a coupon applies first, price it with the Discount Calculator.
  • Restaurant staff and owners. For menu pricing, see the Markup Calculator and Margin Calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate a 20% tip?

Multiply the bill by 0.20. On an $85.50 bill that is 85.50 × 20 ÷ 100 = $17.10, so the total is $102.60. In the calculator, tap 20% and enter the bill. For a mental estimate, move the decimal point one place to get 10% ($8.55) and double it.

Should I tip on the pre-tax amount or the total?

Etiquette guides often suggest the pre-tax subtotal, but many people tip on the full total because it is simpler. The difference is small: on a $50 meal with 8% tax, a 20% tip on the total adds $0.80. To tip on the subtotal, type the tax shown on the receipt into the optional tax field.

How do I split a restaurant bill with the tip included?

Enter the bill, choose the tip, then set Split between (people). The calculator adds the tip first and divides the total, so everyone covers an equal part of it, and shows Bill share, Tip share and Each pays. If orders differ a lot, run it once per person with their own subtotal.

Why do the shares differ by a cent when I split a bill?

A total in cents cannot always be divided evenly. $118.00 is 11,800 cents, and 11,800 ÷ 3 is 3,933.33, so one person pays $39.34 and two pay $39.33. The calculator works in whole cents and says how many people pay each amount, so the shares add up to the total.

What does the round-up switch do to the tip?

Paying alone, Round the total up raises the total to the next whole unit ($100.89 becomes $101.00) and the extra goes to the tip, so 18% becomes 18.13%. When you split, it becomes Round each share up, so everyone pays a whole amount. For yen it rounds up to the next 100 yen.

How much should I tip at a restaurant?

These are typical ranges, not rules. In the United States and Canada, 15-20% is usual in a sit-down restaurant, with 18-20% common for good service. In the UK about 10-12.5% is typical unless a service charge is already on the bill. In much of continental Europe service is included, and in Japan tipping is not customary.

Is it safe to enter my bill into an online tip calculator?

With this one, yes. The tip calculator runs in your browser, so nothing you type is uploaded or stored, and there is no sign-up. Picking a currency only changes formatting; no exchange rates are fetched. Open the Network tab in your browser's DevTools to confirm that changing the bill sends no request.
