Summary

A currency converter turns an amount in one currency into another at an exchange rate. This free one uses the euro reference rates of the European Central Bank (ECB), which the ECB updates once each working day at around 16:00 CET. Press Get exchange rates, type an Amount and choose From and To; the converted amount, the rate each way and the ratesโ€™ date appear at once, calculated in your browser.

These are mid-market reference rates, not live trading prices, so a bank or card usually gives you less. Every ECB rate is quoted against the euro, so converting between two other currencies divides the To rate by the From rate. Measure a providerโ€™s margin with the percentage calculator.

  • Both directions at once: the rate each way, a swap button and a copy button.
  • Compare Rates: one amount shown in as many currencies as you select.
  • Rate History: 30 days, 90 days or 1 year for the chosen pair, loaded only if you press Show rate history.
  • Favourites and saved rates: starred currencies are listed first, and the last table you downloaded is kept in your browser, with its date always shown.

Know the limits: only the 30 ECB currencies, one fix a day and no fees included. For other measurements try the unit converter, and plan calls across countries with the time zone converter.

After you press Show rate history, your browser asks api.frankfurter.dev for the two currency codes over a date range, and asks again each time you change the pair or the period. Your amount stays in your browser.

Who Can Use It

Travellers can price a trip, then split dinners with the split bill calculator and the tip calculator. Freelancers can estimate an invoice in another currency, and shoppers can test whether a quoted rate is fair.

Savers can convert a foreign balance before using the compound interest calculator, and buyers can split tax out of a price with the GST calculator. It is not a trading quote.

FAQs

How often are the exchange rates updated, and are they live?

They are the European Central Bank (ECB) euro reference rates, updated at around 16:00 CET every working day except TARGET closing days, as of October 2026. They are one daily fix, not a live feed, so they can differ from a trading screen. The ECB says they are for information only and strongly discourages using them for transactions.

Why does my bank or card give a different rate?

Banks, card issuers and exchange bureaus add a margin to the mid-market rate, and sometimes a fee, so you usually receive less than this converter shows. When you receive fewer units than the reference rate gives, subtract their rate from the reference rate and divide by the reference rate to see the margin as a percentage. That percentage is the margin you pay, before any separate fee.

Which currencies can I convert?

Every currency the ECB publishes a rate for: the euro plus 29 others, 30 in total as of October 2026, including USD, GBP, JPY, CAD, CNY and INR. Currencies without an ECB rate, such as the UAE dirham, are not available. The Bulgarian lev is gone because Bulgaria joined the euro on 1 January 2026.

How is the rate between two non-euro currencies calculated?

The ECB quotes every currency against the euro, so the converter divides the To rate by the From rate. In the ECB table dated 5 October 2026, USD to INR is 107.8915 รท 1.1204 = 96.2973 rupees per dollar. Treat it as a benchmark, not a quote.

Does the currency converter work offline?

After you have loaded rates once, the table is saved in your browser. On your next visit it is used straight away and labelled with its date; press Refresh rates for a newer one. If the rate service cannot be reached, the saved table is used and the page says so. The saved table only replaces the rate download, so the page itself must still load, from the network or your browserโ€™s cache.

Is this currency converter private?

Your amount stays in your browser. Pressing Get exchange rates or Refresh rates sends one request straight from your browser to api.frankfurter.dev for the dayโ€™s rate table, with no amount or currency choice in it. After you press Show rate history, your browser asks api.frankfurter.dev for the two currency codes over a date range, and asks again each time you change the pair or the period. These requests reveal your IP address to that service.
