Summary: Calculate Your GPA Free and Privately
A GPA calculator turns your course grades and credit hours into one grade point average. This free GPA calculator works out semester GPA, cumulative GPA and weighted GPA on the US 4.0 scale, or a credit-weighted percentage average for marks-based systems. Add courses, pick a grade from A+ to F and enter the credits; results update as you type.
The calculator runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded (you can check the Network tab in DevTools). It does not save your data between visits, so use Copy Results or Export Transcript (.txt) to keep a copy.
The formula is GPA = total quality points ÷ total credit hours, where quality points = grade points × credits. An A (4.0) in a 3-credit course and a B (3.0) in a 4-credit course give (12 + 12) ÷ 7 = 3.43. To find the score you need on a final exam, use the grade calculator; to turn marks into a percentage, use the percentage calculator.
Table of Use: GPA Calculator Examples
Results follow the calculator's own formulas.
| Scenario | What you enter | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Semester GPA | A (3 credits), A- (3), B+ (4), B (3) | 45.3 quality points ÷ 13 credits = 3.48 |
| Weighted GPA | A (3 credits, Regular), B (4 credits, AP / IB) | Unweighted 3.43, weighted 4.00 |
| Cumulative GPA | Semester 1: 12 credits at 3.50; Semester 2: 18 credits at 3.00 | 96 ÷ 30 = 3.20 |
| Percentage scale | 88% (4 credits), 76% (3), 91% (3) | 85.30% average |
| Target planner, reachable | GPA 3.20 over 60 credits, target 3.40, 30 credits to take | You need 3.80 |
| Target planner, out of reach | GPA 3.20 over 60 credits, target 3.50, 30 credits to take | Needs 4.10; straight A grades reach 3.47 |
Features
- Two grading scales. The 4.0 Scale (letter grades) covers A+ to F with plus and minus grades (A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3; A+ also counts 4.0). The Percentage scale averages your marks, weighted by credits.
- Semester and cumulative results. + Add Semester adds a term. Cumulative GPA is credit-weighted, with a per-semester table once you have two or more.
- Weighted GPA. Each course can be Regular, Honors (+0.5) or AP / IB (+1.0). The bonus applies to passing grades only.
- Fractional credits. Credits can be decimals such as 0.5. A 0-credit course is skipped, and an invalid entry is left out with a message.
- Target GPA Planner. Leave the first two fields empty to use your cumulative result, or type your own GPA and credits.
- Grade Conversion Table. It lists the common US percentage cut-offs the tool uses (A = 93-96%, B = 83-86%).
- Copy and export. Copy Results copies a summary, and Export Transcript (.txt) saves every semester as a text file made in your browser.
The scale follows the common US convention. If your school uses a 10-point CGPA or an A+ worth 4.3, confirm the result with your registrar.
How to Use the GPA Calculator
- Under Grading Scale, choose 4.0 Scale (letter grades) or Percentage.
- In Semester 1, type a Course name (optional), pick the Grade (or enter the percentage) and set the Credits.
- On the 4.0 scale, change Type to Honors or AP / IB where it applies.
- Press + Add Course for each class, and + Add Semester for each new term.
- Read the semester card, the Cumulative GPA card and any Weighted GPA line.
- In the Target GPA Planner, enter a Target GPA and the Credits still to take to see the average you need.
For marks such as 42/50, the fraction calculator and scientific calculator help, and the date difference calculator counts the days to term end.
Who Can Use It
- High school students who want weighted and unweighted GPA side by side.
- College students tracking semester and cumulative GPA, or checking a scholarship minimum with the Target GPA Planner.
- Students abroad with percentage results, using the credit-weighted Percentage scale.
- Parents and advisers modelling next term. For the money side, try the savings calculator, loan calculator and interest calculator.
FAQs
How do I calculate my GPA?
Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours to get quality points, add them up, and divide by the total credit hours. An A (4.0) in a 3-credit course and a B (3.0) in a 4-credit course give (12 + 12) ÷ 7 = 3.43.
What is the difference between semester GPA and cumulative GPA?
Semester GPA uses only the courses in one term. Cumulative GPA combines every semester you add, weighting each course by its credits, so it is not the simple average of your semester GPAs. For example, 12 credits at 3.50 and 18 credits at 3.00 give 3.20, not 3.25.
How do I calculate a weighted GPA?
Set a course's Type to Honors (+0.5) or AP / IB (+1.0). The calculator adds that bonus to passing grades only, so an A in an AP class counts as 5.0 and an F stays 0. The weighted GPA appears beside the unweighted one. Schools use different bonuses, so check your own school's policy.
What happens to my grades when I switch to the percentage scale?
Existing courses are converted using the built-in Grade Conversion Table, so an A becomes 93% and a score of 85% becomes a B when you switch back. On the percentage scale the result is a credit-weighted average percentage, not a GPA. Schools set their own cut-offs.
How do I work out what GPA I need to reach my target?
In the Target GPA Planner, enter your current GPA, credits completed, target GPA and credits still to take. It solves (target × total credits − current GPA × completed credits) ÷ remaining credits. If the answer is above 4.0 it says the target is not reachable and shows what straight A grades would give.
Is it safe to enter my grades into this calculator?
Yes. The calculator runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded; you can check the Network tab in DevTools. It also does not save anything between visits, so reloading the page clears your courses. Use Export Transcript (.txt) or Copy Results first if you want to keep them.
