Name Generator

Generate random realistic names from 23 countries, fantasy character names, business name ideas or usernames. Pick a type, set the options and click Generate; names are made in your browser, with no sign-up and nothing sent anywhere.

Summary: how to use a free random name generator privately

A random name generator produces made-up names on demand, for characters, mockups, test data, brainstorming or usernames. To use this one, choose a name type above (Real Names, Fantasy, Business or Username), set the options, enter How many (1 to 200) and press Generate. Then star the names you like, copy one or all, or download a CSV.

Everything happens in your browser. The word lists are part of ZipConvert's own code and are downloaded once, without any of your choices, the first time you press Generate; each name is then assembled on your device with your browser's random number generator, and nothing you choose is uploaded. Only your starred favourites are kept, in this browser's local storage. A generated person is not a real one: a first name and surname are paired at random, so a real person may share the result by chance.

Features

  • 23 countries with their spelling and accents, double surnames for Spain and Mexico, gendered surnames for Poland and family-name-first order for Japan, China and South Korea.
  • No repeats in a list. If your settings allow fewer unique names than you asked for, a note tells you how many were possible.
  • Usernames in four styles (BraveOtter, brave_otter, brave.otter, braveotter), with two or three optional digits. Person results also include an accent-free username such as lucia.garcia58.
  • Favourites. Star any name; the list stays in your browser until you press Clear.
  • Copy and export: copy a single name, copy the whole list, or download a CSV. Cells that start with a spreadsheet formula character are neutralised.
  • No account and no limit on how often you generate.

Names are only part of a realistic fixture. Add photos with the Lorem Picsum generator, filler text with the Lorem Ipsum generator, IDs from the UUID generator or random string generator, and numbers from the random number generator. Merging several batches? Run them through remove duplicate lines and sort lines alphabetically.

How to Use the Name Generator

  1. Pick a name type with the buttons at the top: Real Names, Fantasy, Business or Username.

  3. Enter How many (1–200) and press Generate. Press it again for a fresh list.
  4. Click the star beside a name to keep it, the clipboard icon to copy one, or Copy all and CSV for the whole list.
  5. Find your starred names under Favourites, where you can copy them or press Clear.

Turning a business idea into a web address? The slug generator makes a clean URL fragment from it, and the business card generator and label generator are handy for trying out a layout with sample names.

Who Can Use It

  • Developers and testers who need many distinct people for forms, tables, import tests and demos.
  • Designers and product teams filling mockups with names that look right for a market.
  • Writers, game masters and players looking for character names and fantasy epithets.
  • Founders and community managers brainstorming brand ideas or handles. Check availability before you adopt anything.
  • Teachers and trainers who need example people for exercises that must not use real students.

FAQs

Are the generated people real?

No. Each name is a random pairing of a common first name and a common surname from the chosen country, so it describes nobody in particular, although by chance a real person may share it. That makes the names suitable for test data, mockups, examples and fiction. Do not use them to impersonate anyone.

Which countries does the random name generator cover?

Twenty-three: the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Brazil, Mexico, India, Iran, Turkey, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Poland, Japan, China, South Korea, Nigeria and Egypt. Names keep their usual spelling and accents. Choose Any (mixed) in the Country menu to draw from all of them.

How do the country naming conventions work?

Spanish and Mexican names get two surnames. Polish surnames take the feminine form for women, such as Kowalska. Japanese, Chinese and Korean names are written with the family name first. Every other country uses first name then surname. Each country draws on 25 first names per gender and 20 to 30 surnames, so the set is small and common rather than a statistical sample.

How are fantasy names made?

A fantasy name joins an opening syllable, sometimes a middle syllable, and an ending, then removes doubled vowels and long vowel runs. The Sound menu switches between masculine and feminine endings. Tick Add a title or surname to attach one of 16 epithets, giving names such as Belina of the North or Kalador Ironheart.

Can I use a generated business name for my company?

Treat it as an idea. The generator combines short brand words and your optional keyword, but it cannot know whether a name is already taken. Check the trademark register and company register for your country, and whether the domain name is free, before you commit to one.

Can I generate a list of names for test data?

Yes. Generate up to 200 names at once with no repeats inside a list, then use Copy all or download a CSV. Person names come with full name, first name, last name, gender, country and a username such as lucia.garcia58; the other types give a single Name column. If fewer unique names exist for your settings, a note says so.

Is it safe to use, and is anything sent or saved?

Nothing you choose is uploaded: the word lists are part of the site's own code, fetched the first time you press Generate, and every name is assembled in your browser. In the Network tab of DevTools you will see that script load, and no request carrying your settings. The only thing stored is the list of names you star as favourites, kept in this browser's local storage on your device so it is still there next visit. Clear removes it.
