Reverse text online, free and private
To reverse text online for free, type or paste it into the Input Text box. With Reversal Mode on Character, the reversed text appears under Reversed Text as you type, and Copy or Download .txt saves it. Everything happens in your browser, and the Network tab in DevTools shows that nothing is uploaded.
A string reverser returns text in the opposite order. Reversing characters turns "hello" into "olleh". The other three modes reverse larger units: Word flips the order of words on each line, Line flips the order of the lines, and Sentence flips the order of the sentences on each line. Emoji and accented letters are handled as whole characters, so they are not broken in the process.
Reversing is not the same as sorting. To put lines in dictionary order, use sort lines alphabetically. To scramble the letters themselves for a puzzle, use the ROT13 encoder and decoder.
Table of Use: modes and results
Each row shows a Reversal Mode, what you paste in and what you get back. ↵ marks a line break.
| Task | Reversal Mode | Input | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reverse a string | Character | Hello World | dlroW olleH |
| Reverse the order of words | Word | one two three | three two one |
| Reverse each word in place | Word with "Preserve word order" ticked | one two three | eno owt eerht |
| Put a list upside down | Line | first↵second↵third | third↵second↵first |
| Reverse the order of sentences | Sentence | Hi. How are you? Fine! | Fine! How are you? Hi. |
| Reverse text that contains an emoji | Character | Hi 👋🏽 there | ereht 👋🏽 iH (the emoji stays whole) |
| Reverse a whole multi-line text | Character | ab↵cd | dc↵ba (line order and each line both flip) |
| Check a palindrome | Any | A man, a plan, a canal: Panama | A green "Palindrome" message under the input box |
Features
- Four Reversal Modes. Character, Word, Line and Sentence.
- Preserve word order. A Word mode option. Ticked, it reverses the letters of each word and keeps the words in sequence. Unticked, it reverses the order of the words.
- Safe with Unicode. Character mode works on whole user-perceived characters, using the browser's Intl.Segmenter where it exists, so emoji, flags, accents and combining marks stay intact.
- Layout kept. Word and Sentence modes work line by line and leave line breaks, leading spaces and the gaps between words where they were. A final line break survives Line mode.
- Palindrome check. Letters and digits in any script, ignoring case, accents and punctuation. It needs at least two characters.
- Save to History. Keeps your last ten reversals in a Recent Reversals list. Click an entry to restore it. The list lives in the open tab only and is cleared when you leave.
- Files and clean-up. Open .txt, .md, .json, .xml, .csv or .log files; Download .txt saves reversed-text.txt. Use Output as Input reverses the result again, and Reset restores Character mode.
After reversing, count the result with the character counter or word counter, adjust capitals with the text case converter, or number the lines with add line numbers.
How to Reverse Text Step by Step
- Type or paste your text into Input Text, or click Choose File under "Or open a text file".
- Under Reversal Mode choose Character, Word, Line or Sentence.
- In Word mode, tick "Preserve word order (reverse each word individually)" if you want each word flipped in place.
- Read the result under Reversed Text. A green message under the input box appears if your text is a palindrome.
- Click Copy or Download .txt. Use Save to History to keep the result, Use Output as Input to reverse it again, or Reset to start over.
Who Can Use It
Programmers check the expected output of a reverse-string exercise or a unit test. Teachers and word-game fans test palindromes. Writers and social media users make backwards text for a joke or a teaser. Anyone with a log or changelog in oldest-first order can put it newest-first with Line mode.
Puzzle makers combine reversing with other encodings, such as the Morse code translator or the Base64 encoder. To tidy a list before or after reversing it, use remove duplicate lines or remove empty lines.
FAQs
How do I reverse text or a string online for free?
Type or paste your text into the Input Text box, or click Choose File to open a text file. With Reversal Mode on Character, the reversed text appears under Reversed Text as you type, so "hello" becomes "olleh". Click Copy to take it or Download .txt to save reversed-text.txt. There is no sign-up and the text stays in your browser.
How do I reverse the order of words in a sentence?
Click Word under Reversal Mode and leave "Preserve word order" unticked. The words on each line are put in the opposite order, so "one two three" becomes "three two one". The spaces between the words and any line breaks stay where they were. If your text has several lines, each line is reversed separately and the lines keep their order.
How do I reverse each word but keep the words in the same order?
Choose Word mode and tick "Preserve word order (reverse each word individually)". Each word is flipped in place and the words stay in sequence, so "one two three" becomes "eno owt eerht". The label reads the opposite way from what many people expect: ticking it keeps the word order and reverses the letters inside every word.
How do I reverse the order of lines in a list or log file?
Click Line under Reversal Mode. The last line becomes the first and the first becomes the last, while the text of each line is untouched. This is a quick way to put a log, a changelog or a numbered list into newest-first order. A line break at the very end of the text stays at the end of the result.
How does the palindrome check work?
The tool keeps only the letters and digits of your input, removes accents, ignores case and then checks whether the result reads the same backwards. "A man, a plan, a canal: Panama" counts. When it does, a green "Palindrome" message appears under the input box. The check runs on the text you type, whichever Reversal Mode is selected, and needs at least two characters.
Does reversing work on emoji, accented letters and other scripts?
Yes. Character mode reverses whole user-perceived characters, so an emoji with a skin tone, a flag, a letter with a combining accent and characters from non-Latin scripts stay in one piece instead of being split into broken symbols. The tool relies on the browser's Intl.Segmenter for this and falls back to code points where it is missing.
Is reversed text the same as mirror text or upside-down text?
No. This tool reverses the order of characters, words, lines or sentences, so you get "olleH", not a mirror image of the letters. It does not flip glyphs or swap them for upside-down look-alike symbols. If you want the reversed text as a puzzle, the ROT13 tool scrambles the letters themselves, and Morse code turns them into dots and dashes.
Is my text uploaded when I use the string reverser?
No. The text is reversed by JavaScript in your browser and a file you open is read on your device, so nothing is sent to ZipConvert or anyone else. The Recent Reversals list is kept only in the open tab and is cleared when you leave the page. Open the Network tab in DevTools while you type and you will see no request.
