Text to ASCII Converter: Get the Code of Every Character
A text to ASCII converter turns each character of a text into its numeric code. To convert text to ASCII for free, paste it into Input Text, choose Decimal, Hexadecimal or Binary under Output Format, and read the codes in the ASCII Codes box. "Hi" becomes 72 105 in decimal, 48 69 in hex and 01001000 01101001 in binary. The conversion runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded; you can check the Network tab in your browser's DevTools.
ASCII itself covers only codes 0 to 127. When your text has characters beyond that, such as accented letters, other alphabets or emoji, a notice states how many there are and the Non-ASCII characters as menu decides how they are written: as a Unicode code point, as UTF-8 bytes or as UTF-16 code units. The letter รฉ is 233, then 195 169, then 233; the emoji ๐ is 128512, then 240 159 152 128, then 55357 56832.
To go the other way, the ASCII to text converter turns decimal or hex codes back into words, and the binary to text converter reads eight-bit groups such as 01001000 01101001.

Text to ASCII Converter Features
- Three number systems: Decimal (base-10), Hexadecimal (base-16, capitals, two digits minimum) and Binary (base-2, padded to whole bytes).
- Separators: Space, Comma (a comma and a space) or Newline for one code per line.
- Prefixes: optional 0x or 0b before each hex or binary value.
- Non-ASCII choices: Unicode code point, UTF-8 bytes or UTF-16 code units, with an on-screen count of characters outside ASCII.
- Include spaces switch: leave spaces out of the output when you only want letters and digits.
- Table view: Character, Unicode (U+0041 style), Decimal, Hexadecimal, Binary and UTF-8 bytes for every character, showing the first 5,000 rows on screen while Copy and Download include all of them.
- Copy and Download: the output view saves ascii-codes-decimal.txt (or hexadecimal, binary); the table view saves ascii-mapping-table.tsv, a tab-separated file for spreadsheets.
- Undo, Redo and Clear: Undo and Redo step through your recent edits and settings, and the character and word counts update as you type. Counts are per Unicode code point, so a single emoji such as ๐ counts as one character, while flags and combined emoji count as two or more.
Note that the tool converts to codes only; it does not encode text as Base64 or percent-escapes. For those, use the Base64 encoder or the URL encoder, and the HTML entity encoder can write non-ASCII characters as numeric entities such as é.
How to Use the Text to ASCII Converter
- Type or paste your text into Input Text. The counts underneath show characters and words.
- Pick Output Format: Decimal, Hexadecimal or Binary.
- Choose a Separator and, if the text has accents or emoji, set Non-ASCII characters as.
- Tick or untick Include spaces in conversion, and Add 0x / 0b prefix for hex or binary.
- Read the codes in ASCII Codes, or press Table under View Mode for the full character table.
- Press Copy or Download, and Clear to start again.
Who Can Use the Text to ASCII Converter
Students learning how computers store text can watch a word turn into numbers, then continue with the hex to binary converter and the binary to hex converter. Developers check which byte values a string produces, debug a stray character in a data file, or prepare byte arrays for tests. Puzzle fans can pair it with the Morse code translator or the ROT13 and Caesar cipher tool.
Editors and data cleaners paste suspicious text, find the invisible character in Table view, and then remove it with find and replace. The character counter and the text case converter are natural next steps for cleaned-up text.
Text to ASCII Converter FAQs
How do I convert text to ASCII codes?
Type or paste your text into Input Text and the codes appear at once in the ASCII Codes box, one per character (a non-ASCII character can give several codes in the UTF-8 or UTF-16 modes). Choose Decimal, Hexadecimal or Binary under Output Format and a Space, Comma or Newline separator, then press Copy or Download. For example, "Hi" gives 72 105 in decimal, 48 69 in hexadecimal and 01001000 01101001 in binary.
What is the ASCII code for a letter, a digit or a space?
Uppercase A to Z are 65 to 90, lowercase a to z are 97 to 122, the digits 0 to 9 are 48 to 57 and a space is 32. In hexadecimal those ranges are 41 to 5A, 61 to 7A, 30 to 39 and 20. So "A" is 65 (hex 41, binary 01000001) and "a" is 97, exactly 32 higher.
What is the difference between ASCII, Unicode and UTF-8?
ASCII is a 7-bit code with 128 characters, numbered 0 to 127. Unicode gives a number, called a code point, to characters of every writing system, up to U+10FFFF (1,114,111). UTF-8 is a way of storing those numbers as bytes. The first 128 Unicode code points equal ASCII, so "A" is 65 in all three.
What happens to accented letters, other alphabets and emoji?
They are outside ASCII, so the tool counts them and lets you choose under "Non-ASCII characters as": the Unicode code point (รฉ = 233, ๐ = 128512), the UTF-8 bytes (รฉ = 195 169, ๐ = 240 159 152 128) or the UTF-16 code units JavaScript uses (๐ = 55357 56832). Characters in the ASCII range give the same number in all three modes.
How do I convert text to hexadecimal or binary?
Select Hexadecimal or Binary under Output Format. Hex is shown in capitals and padded to two digits, so a line feed is 0A, and binary is padded to whole bytes, so A is 01000001. Tick "Add 0x / 0b prefix" to get 0x48 0x69 or 0b01001000 0b01101001, which you can paste into code. The prefix box is disabled for decimal output.
How do I find hidden characters such as a non-breaking space in my text?
Paste the text and switch View Mode to Table. Every character gets a row with its Unicode value, decimal, hex, binary and UTF-8 bytes, and invisible ones are named, for example [TAB], [LF], [NBSP] or [ZERO WIDTH SPACE]. Characters outside ASCII carry a "non-ASCII" tag, which makes odd characters pasted from web pages or documents easy to spot.
Is this the same as text to ASCII art?
No. This tool converts each character into its numeric ASCII or Unicode code. It does not draw big banner letters or pictures from keyboard symbols, which is what an ASCII art generator does. If you want to read the codes back as words, the ASCII to Text Converter reverses the process.
Is my text uploaded or stored?
No. The conversion runs in your browser with JavaScript, so your text is not sent to ZipConvert or anyone else, which you can confirm in the Network tab of your browser's DevTools. Nothing is saved after you close or reload the tab, and there is no sign-up.
