Convert 7z to ZIP free and private, without installing 7-Zip

To convert 7z to ZIP free and private, drag your .7z file onto the converter above (or click it to browse), leave the output on ZIP and press Convert to ZIP. The archive is decompressed and rewritten as a standard ZIP inside your browser tab, then offered as a download named after your file, so backup.7z becomes backup.zip. Nothing is uploaded, which you can confirm in the Network tab of DevTools, and no account or software is needed.

7z is the native format of 7-Zip, the free archiver Igor Pavlov first released in 1999. Its LZMA and LZMA2 compression usually beats ZIP’s Deflate, and 7-Zip packs many files together as one solid block by default, so the price of this conversion is size. In our test, the 32 files (4.5 MB) of the react-dom 18.3.1 npm package came to 379 KB as a 7z and 1.15 MB as a ZIP, about three times bigger. Photos and videos barely change.

As of October 2026, Windows 11 opens 7z in File Explorer (since Microsoft’s optional update KB5031455 in October 2023); Windows 10 and macOS need extra software. A RAR file is the closest relative, and Linux tarballs go through the TAR.XZ to ZIP converter, the TAR.GZ to ZIP converter or the TAR.BZ2 to ZIP converter.

Your files stay on this device

This converter runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded. When you add your first archive, the page fetches its engine, a WebAssembly build of libarchive of about 1 MB, from zipconvert.com. Your 7Z file is then read from disk and rewritten as ZIP inside the tab. To check, open DevTools, switch to the Network tab and convert a file: apart from those engine files, no request carries it. The privacy policy covers the rest of the site.

Table of Use: 7z to ZIP at a glance

What to do with each kind of 7z archive and what the converter gives you
Your 7zWhat to doWhat you get
A normal .7z backup or downloadDrop it, keep ZIP selected and press Convert to ZIPA ZIP with the same files, folders and dates
A 7z full of text, source code or documentsThe same steps; expect a bigger fileA ZIP several times the size of the 7z (about three times in our test)
A 7z full of JPEGs, MP4s or other compressed filesThe same stepsA ZIP of about the same size, because such files barely shrink under either format
An AES-encrypted 7zOpen it with 7-Zip, Keka or The Unarchiver and the passwordThe converter says it cannot unlock 7z encryption and writes nothing
A split set such as .7z.001 and .7z.002Extract the set with 7-Zip firstThe part is refused with a message
A 7z that downloaded only partlyDownload it againA message that the 7-Zip header points past the end of the file; no ZIP is written

If the archive came with a published checksum, verify the download with the file hash calculator before converting. The converter’s own checks show that the data is intact, not that it is the file the publisher released.

Features

  • Reads 7z in the browser. libarchive 3.7.2, compiled to WebAssembly, decompresses the archive, including the LZMA2 method 7-Zip uses by default. The format is detected from the first bytes, not the extension.
  • Checks that the file is complete. Before unpacking, the converter confirms that the 7-Zip header fits inside the file, so a truncated download fails with a clear message instead of a half-empty ZIP. Damage inside the data is reported too.
  • Keeps what ZIP can carry. Folders (including empty ones), modification dates, Unix permissions, symbolic links and UTF-8 names come across, and a folder that 7-Zip lists after its contents is moved ahead of them so extractors restore its date.
  • Never overwrites silently. If two entries share a path, the later one is saved as, for example, report (2).txt and listed in the summary. Unsafe “..” paths are cleaned and counted.
  • Opens 7z, does not create it. The in-browser 7z writer fails on incompressible data such as photos, so it is not offered. Encrypted and split 7z files get a specific message.

To send the files to a Linux machine, repack them with the ZIP to TAR.GZ converter; the home page converter lists every format the engine reads.

How to convert 7z to ZIP, step by step

  1. Add the .7z file

Drag it onto the box labelled “Drop 7Z files here or click to browse”, or click the box and choose the file. Several archives can be queued. The converter starts fetching its engine, about 1 MB, when the first one is added.

  2. Leave “Convert to” on ZIP

After you add a file, a “Convert to” menu appears, preset to ZIP. It also offers TAR, TAR.GZ and GZIP (single file) if you need one of those instead.

  3. Press Convert to ZIP

The button reads Convert all to ZIP when several archives are queued. A progress bar shows each file; an encrypted or split 7z gets a red message on its row instead.

  4. Download the ZIP

Click the button labelled with the new file name, such as backup.zip. The note below the row counts files, folders and links and lists anything that could not be carried over.

Disc images work too: the ISO to ZIP converter reads them without mounting.

Who can use it

  • Anyone without 7-Zip. Windows 10, macOS and most phones cannot open a .7z, and installing an archiver is not always allowed.
  • People sending a backup to someone else. A ZIP is the format a recipient can double-click; a 7z often draws a reply asking what to open it with.
  • Support and IT staff. Turn a customer’s .7z log bundle into a ZIP on a machine where nothing new can be installed.
  • Privacy-minded users. The archive is read from disk and unpacked in the tab, so a confidential 7z is not copied to anyone else’s server.

FAQs

How do I convert a 7z file to ZIP without 7-Zip?

Drag the .7z onto the converter on this page, keep ZIP selected and press Convert to ZIP. Your browser decompresses the archive with a WebAssembly build of libarchive and writes a standard ZIP, which you save from the button on the file’s row. No 7-Zip, WinRAR or other software is installed, and the file never leaves your device.

Why is my ZIP bigger than the original 7z?

7-Zip compresses with LZMA or LZMA2 and by default treats many files as one solid block, which removes more redundancy than ZIP’s file-by-file Deflate can. The ZIP holds exactly the same data under weaker compression. In our test, the react-dom 18.3.1 package was 379 KB as 7z and 1.15 MB as ZIP. Photos and videos barely shrink in either format, so they barely change.

Can it open password-protected 7z files?

No. 7-Zip encrypts with AES-256, and the libarchive engine used here cannot decrypt 7z, so an encrypted archive is reported and nothing is converted. Use 7-Zip, Keka or The Unarchiver with the password. Password-protected ZIP files are different: the converter asks for the password and unlocks them inside your browser.

Can I convert ZIP to 7z here?

Not at the moment. The in-browser 7z writer sizes its output buffer from the input, so it fails on archives full of already-compressed data such as photos and video. Rather than offer a converter that breaks on archives of photos or video, ZipConvert writes ZIP, TAR, TAR.GZ and GZIP, and reads 7z only.

Does converting 7z to ZIP upload my files anywhere?

No. The converter runs in your browser. When you add the first archive, the page fetches its engine files from zipconvert.com; your 7z is then read from your disk and processed in the tab. You can check this: with the Network tab of DevTools open, converting a file sends no request that contains it.

How large a 7z file can I convert?

Files up to 2 GB are accepted, with a warning above 1 GB. The limit is memory: the archive and its unpacked contents are held in the browser tab at the same time. Because 7z compresses so well, a modest file can unpack to far more than its size, and if memory runs out you see a message instead of a ZIP.
